Semi-colons seem to be still popular with Americans but in the UK they’re pretty much avoided. In fact, I don’t think anyone uses them on here at all.

That is probably still accurate in a literal usage sense. But it was written by an academic in 1997.

I think his point in the middle that a semi-colon can, in principle, always be replaced by a full stop or an “and” explains why it’s not really needed. Like gourmet baked beans.
