Exactly. And Diss is a mere shadow of what it used to be.

Sadly this is the case in very many towns across the country.
Oddly the only town I've been to recently that seemed to be bucking the trend is Hitchin in Hertfordshire. Can't really work out why.

Amazon, Netflix, online supermarkets, online clothes stores... Spotify... online banking

Nobody needs to go into Town anymore apart to see doctors and pick up prescriptions and even then that's all going online now.

There is no saving it.

It’s time to rethink town centers; more housing, more walking trails and leisure facilities. Less shops. That model is gone.

Problem is, there's little reason to live in town centres either, any more. Less space, often poorer quality housing, many of the shops have gone - and, increasingly, peple don't even work there.

I think we're more likely to end up with a dispersed model, in which a larger town would develop into a collection of more loosely-bound groups of communities, each centred around a "mini high street" with a few local shops, a small supermarket, bars and cafes, with much less of a main focal point at the centre.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

City centre Gloucester has loads of empty commercial properties, offices, retail etc

These are now being converted to residential under Permitted Development rights, no Planning Permission required and therefore no assessment of the impact of the extra residents

Mate of mine has worked on several of these, all being made into one bed flats and then handed over to a Housing Association that specialises in finding homes for "troubled adults" To date he has worked on 4 buildings of 10 -15 flats.

I don't imagine these new residents will be too interested in the trendy coffee shops, funky restaurants and bijou coffee bars that are being touted as the path forward for regenerating City Centre

I think we might be looking at a whole new set of issues to address

I don’t think high streets will go, but they will shrink. People like to pop out to the shops and meet one another.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
