I know you've all seen the video but.... 22:50 - Nov 9 with 1994 viewsgtsb1966

the hunting fraternity really are a bunch of ***** aren't they. Usually, and quite rightly, you shouldn't tar a group of people with the same brush but to me this lot are all the same. If you get pleasure out of watching a frightened animal getting ripped to pieces then kicking and hitting a horse isn't going to bother you. I bet the people she was with never said a cross word to her at the time.

Absolutely indefensible, and she's quite rightly being punished for that.

Points of order though - this was a drag hunt, not a fox hunt (now illegal); and no, they are "not all the same" - as you said yourself, "quite rightly, you shouldn't tar a group of people with the same brush".

A lot of "drag hunts" are a fox hunt in a poor disguise.

But as you insinuate most, horsey people I know would be appalled by this. But there are also some that wouldn't be. There are a not a just few equivalents of the awful Barbra Woodhouse in the horse world from my understanding.

As a kid, family & myself watched Barbara Woodhouse dog training on TV shows regularly ("SIT"!). Can't remember her ever once hitting or kicking any dog - if she had, we'd have switched off & complained to the Beeb.

There are always a few bad 'uns around in every aspect of society unfortunately; all the more reason for decent people to stand up & blow the whistle when it does happen - as was the case here -

A teacher as well. As a bit of an aside, that article says she works for Mowbray Educational Trust. There’s an interesting wiki entry for one of their academies:

“In July 2021, the school received criticism in the local and national media for a new behaviour policy which is to be implemented by Natalie Teece at the start of the 2021-2022 academic year. These newer rules require pupils to smile at all times, make continuous eye contact with staff, to not look out of windows, to never turn around (even after hearing a noise from behind), to always sit up straight, to walk in single file at all times, to not pick up stationery unless specifically directed to do so by staff, to learn and respond to a series of whistle commands from staff, to always respond to staff in a sufficiently upbeat manner and to be constantly grateful that they have the privilege to be at the schooL”

She used choke chains and pain to control dogs!

Talk to any good dog behaviourist about Woodhouse and you will not hear a good word about her methods. There are still a few "gun dog" trainers that I know of use her methods or methods like hers out there. She took dog training back years, even at the time she was arguing against the animal behaviourists (you never saw a choke chain around a guild dogs neck) and the science....where have we heard that before. That you look back on her (you're an obvious animal lover) with fondness just shows the damage she has done.

You're talking with 20/20 hindsight, & your last sentence is out of order.
She didn't do any damage to myself or my late family - the shows we watched were 40+ years ago, & the only two things I remember about them are her hand signal for 'sit', and her well known "walkieeeees" call, which became a family joke. I've not used a choke chain on the dogs I've had of my own as an adult, nor (I hope obviously) any other "painful"methods. What "others" did she use? as I don't recall her using any.

Training methods thankfully change as understanding grows & people become more enlighted, in keeping with the development of behavioural science. Your perspective is a perfectly reasonable one for 2021, but it's unreasonable to get in a time machine & apply it to the 1980s.

I remember being shocked at the news report of that in the summer.

I do have reservations at the way this has been handled tho, I suppose you can't expect hunt sabs to refrain from posting it on social media & it had already gone viral by Monday evening, but the female perpetrating the abuse on the pony has a child who I think can be seen in the footage, & who may well suffer as a result of her mother being publicly outed like that.

Not sure why some people want to trivialise her behaviour by making comedy out of it.

I assume your film stunt clip was covered by the usual "no animals were hurt in the making of this film".

It was Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles - a fine comedy film from 1974...

"Despite how hilarious Mongo’s knockout punch scene was considered, some viewers saw it as inappropriate. Animal rights activists were enraged with the treatment of the horse, despite the fact that in reality, no horses were injured. Still, it was argued that a lesser violent scene could have been made, which would not have made others get any ideas as was suggested in the film. Fortunately, the filmmakers did not have to harm any animals to film the scene, as they had horses trained to fall on command."

Although I suspect earlier Hollywood westerns were not so considerate...

Anyone who owns, works with, or handles horses/ponies geting any ideas from that scene that punching them in the head (or anywhere else) is OK should be barred from owning or working with them.

I'm glad the usual disclaimer applied, as I assumed it had (think most people would assume the same).

Very few Hunts actually drag hunt! The majority still break the law and the police do not act on it.
The recent case of Mark Hankinson shows their contempt huntsman have for the law.

That you saw a fairly well known clip from an equally well known film (not to you I grant) as an attempt to trivialise animal cruelty is disappointing as that was not my intention but simply your presumption.

Even though you don't know the film I think it is fairly clear in the clip that the "punch" is pulled making no contact with the animal and that the rider of the horse pulls the reins in what is, to me at least, a move that the horse has been trained to accept as a command to "fall over".

It's linking her behaviour with comedy, which as far as I'm concerned isn't acceptable. I felt the same about Badger's post.

Yes they are all the same....the people who join a hunt that is. Why join a hunt in the first place. It's not to go horse riding on a Sunday afternoon and admire the countryside. If fox hunting was reintroduced tomorrow everyone who is a member of a hunt would think all their Christmases had come at once. As has been said many of these hunts break the law. They go to church on a Sunday morning and sing "all things bright and beautiful" and then take great pleasure in seeing a beautiful animal ripped apart in the afternoon. Hypocrites and scum the lot of them.
