Your hope is misplaced. You need to look at games played.
Sunderland 6th and Oxford 7th both have 2 games in hand.
MK Dons in 8th have a game in hand too.
At least one of these 5 games will be won making the difference 11 points or 10 in case of MK Dons.
81 points to play for but we are not making up 10-11 points, especially considering number of teams between us and 6th. We need form of 4 or 5 sides to fall off a cliff.
Even when that happens (as with Sunderland) we haven't actually made up any ground.
We need to go on a run of like 6-7 wins. It could happen under a new manager if we for once got the new manger bounce effect. It is not going to happen under PC because he can't adapt. Not that long back I was one of those defending that it was too early to write the season off. Loads of points to play for and daft to say it before christmas.
This season is over for expectation of promotion now, not because of the points left to play for, but because we have no level of consistency and quite frankly not good enough as a Team (Squad) to go on a run that nets 40-50 points out of the games left.
Yup, on paper we are, yes we have a talented squad of individuals, but teams with less capable players have beat us with ease. The odd good win here and there isn't enough now, particularly with the terrible start to the season.
I have come to terms with League 1 football for another 18 months, as hard as it is to accept it.
If I am wrong and we make the play offs I will donate a pound for every point we have and if we get promoted I will add a pound for every goal scored. |  |

Oxford are on a good run, but have Rotherham next.
MK have Morecombe next, but then Plymouth.

You can't use games of the future as evidence for anything (unless, of course, it's teams playing each other, in which case someone has to get some points). |  |
