Just booked on line to have my Renault Serviced. Cost of service and MOT is just over £140

Renault recommend replacing coolant at a cost of £168 which seems a tad expensive. Car 5 years old but, thanks in part to Covid, covered less than 23,000.

What is the benefit of replacing coolant and what risks involved if not having it done?

You'd probably pay less than £100 for a coolant change at a non-main dealer. Bunch of thieving gits.

They will tell you that coolant gets more acidic over time and therefore more likely to rust you cooling system.

Still some work outstanding they are supposed to do under manufacturers warranty. They have supposedly been waiting 12 months for a replacement door mirror. Other side is going now as well.

Every 5 years or 30k miles is what I've done in the past.

Old coolant can cause corrosion, but I don't know how long it really takes to cause a problem.

As previously suggested, find a local garage, £168 seems pretty steep!

Renault say 4 years or 72,000 they must have changed their recommendations.

It't how main "stealers" make their money. It's not the cars, it's all the add ons.

I do love the 'free health checks' that they so generously provide. Normally to be able to advise you that your tyres or brakes are over half worn and they recommend changing them.

No thanks, I'll wait.

Is the service necessary?

Apart from the oil change, which is of course necessary every now and then, is there anything in a service you can't do in 20 minutes yourself for free? Top up your water, check your tyre pressures...

I paid £115 for oil change and MOT with a deal a local tyre centre was doing and was chuffed with that. They didn't even try to pretend it needed tyres which I was pleasantly surprised at.

Coolant how much? Feckity feck right off.

Top it up every now and then if it's weak. Get a little testing kit if you must, under a tenner.

On 7th, or8th Renault all did well over 72,000.

I’ m a conservative driver, brakes on last one had pads replaced at just short of 100,000 miles.

The episode that never got written. Missed a trick there.

To the OP, Halfords appear to be advertising a coolant change for 40 quid. That's got to be nearer the mark surely.

I know it's Halfords but how hard can it be?

It was a splendid feeling when I had a fleet car at work to just walk up to the service reception desk and collect the keys, whilst the hapless person being served at the same time was being asked 'So that's £421.36. How will you be paying?'

I used to have a Megane, the main dealer wanted hundreds to change a main light bulb which after seeing how to do it, I could quite believe, Did it myself in the end but at the cost of a lot of swearing and skinned knuckles.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Halfords Store gave up replacing a headlight bulb on a Renault Scenic, apologised and gave me my money back. Drove round to Halfords Service Centre they had a good laugh about it and replaced bulb for free.
