I thought the customer was king in America? Paying a lot of money to sit in the p*ssing rain is hardly customer friendly...

Is a bit of a conundrum. Do you know the plural of conundrum and why?

In all fairness, no. Golf is basically a country walk with worse tailoring and more institutional racism rather than a sport. [Post edited 30 Jan 2022 22:28]

Not quite. Plural is conundrums, reason being conundrum is an English not Latin word. It was a made up word made to sound Latin but is defo of English origin. (According to an episode of QI)

Heh, yes. When I went to the States we were looking to go to a college game, but it would have been a September evening in Idaho, thus very chilly and tickets were too pricey.

Arguably, even words of Latin/Greek/other origin which have been borrowed by English should follow the endings conventions of the latter, as we do not customarily use their grammar (having mostly squashed our declining or conjugating and abolishing genders).

Indexes, yes. An x at the end of a word is equivalent to an s.

Never heard that word but in sports writing have often seen “winningest” as in most winningest coach of all time. I refuse to accept it’s a real word.

This is why I love TWTD. A thread about boring niche sports has turned into a rather esoteric discussion about about uses of language and etymology.

All these '-ums' that are English words (i.e. aren't italicised in print to denote they are a word merely borrowed from a foreign language) end with 's' in the plural. Conundrums. Stadiums. Vomitoriums. Auditoriums. Give them the Latin plural is being a bit silly; an attempt to look smart that actually achieves the opposite. Otherwise, as somebody once observed, we'd describe mathematicians as people who sit on their ba doing sa. Obviously, just my opinion.
