Is this worth watching or is it just a regurgitation of what we already knew about him? (IE. He was a pedo)

Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story by Illinoisblue 8 Apr 2022 16:12
On Netflix. Facking hell. We all know the story and the depravity but he wasn’t even trying to hide his filthy ways.

On TV being interviewed by Harry Secombe saying about his work at Leeds Hosptial, “I help the lads and when nobody’s watching I help the lasses too”. Laughter from Harry.

On a different show with (who else) Gary Glitter who asks Jimmy if he’s aware of his reputation. Jimmy laughs and says “we’ve got some bean bags ready for you” as Glitter says he’s scanning the audience looking for girls.

Noncing in plain sight on national TV. Quite extraordinary.

TWTD. I haven’t seen a good egg comment on here for ages, so I don’t know where I dragged that up from.

I watched it. There were so many 'red flags' that people chose to ignore - quite unbelievable with hindsight. The bit with Selina Scott was really cringey - yet he got away with it. And he was probably laughing at us. He was an utter bar steward!

I think it's good to watch to just see how he was on TV, which is actually quite astonishing. As has been widely commented, he wasn't even really hiding it

Interesting though how when he came up against an aggressive interviewer on TV, he would play to the audience for their sympathy.

Yes, he was clearly rattled or at least uncomfortable when being interviewed by Andrew Neill. Very defensive when asked why he didn’t have a girlfriend.

It is worth watching, maybe in conjunction with the Mary Whitehouse doc on iPlayer. I didn't realise that it took until the 1990s to get child pornography protection laws in place. Whitehouse was advocating for this from the 70s.

I read a Louis Theroux interview where he was quite critical of himself for not speaking up / exposing Saville more in his documentary. Initially I was quite sympathetic (to LT of course, not JS) but on reflection I'm less so. Saville's character was widely speculated and perhaps even a big part of the reason he was approached as the subject of the show. LT probed this area, so it was certainly done so with that in mind and not a secret to anyone. I know it was a different time etc but I don't know how or why he was allowed to get away with what he did and not challenged more.

I remember there being an organisation called PIE in th 1970s. Paedophilic Information Exchange I think it stood for. It was a full in plain sight organisation promoting paedophilia and lobbying parliament to lower the age of consent! Unbelievable!

They get a mention on the Saville doc, frankly appalling that their views were tolerated.

My recollection of him during his 70s and 80s heyday was that he was an oddball, an eccentric, maybe a bit spooky. Nothing more. Clearly armed with the truth the signs are there, but I don't think anybody other than his victims at the time knew what had happened. There were rumours around Fleet Street it seems, but there were probably rumours of one sort or another about pretty well everybody in the public eye.

He clearly created a very artful smokescreen, and with knowledge of the truth some of the things he said have an eerie resonance they didn't have at the time.

As Ian Hislop said in a clip from HIGNFY after all the revelations came out (a clip included in the documentary), it was all rumour and innuendo. No evidence.

My mates brother won a competition and the prize was dinner with Jimmy Saville, the all felt quite creeped out buy him because he kept hitting on her mum and tried to stick his tonge down her throat.

I think he was bit of sociopath

I watched it last night. Quite astounding. Particularly chilling were the tapes from his taped interview. So arrogant. Threatening to sue the policewoman interviewing him!
