Impressed in his pre season games, wouldn’t be surprised to see him Ladapo and Harness as our front 3 V Bolton.

The only Muff in Town.

Ladapo has done well too. Nice to have some options. Still not sure we have that 20 goal a season striker yet.

But we will have goals coming from elsewhere too.

It feels nice to say with some confidence.

I've only seen the goals [tonight] but there's some obvious athleticism in this side clearly so McKenna has picked up the type of players he wanted.

It's hard to not be optimistic isn't it? Anxious about getting carried away but can't help but feel hopeful.

Yes - we have all the ingredients, competent owners with financial backing, a decent squad…and finally a talented young manager.

But I’ve been optimistic before!

I feel as though we might struggle with teams who are going to sit deep, whether we have enough creativity or that star dust to score a goal from nothing, I’m yet to be totally convinced. Hopefully I’m wrong, I feel we have more than enough for play offs, but not sure on the top 2 yet.

JJT’s career is about to take off. A couple of decent loans but cut short through jiggly injuries. He is further forward than some of the first time loans we’ve had. He keeps fit this year and he is going places - propelling us too.

For starters, I can see KMcK sticking with Chappers plus Harness, it’s all going to shake out as the season beds down, they are all going to get game time, it will depend on how we feel we can best breakdown opposition game by game.

The top two expectations concern me.

I think we'll do just fine this coming season but we need to put aside any thoughts of entitlement. No one is going to step aside for us.

Not aimed at you btw, just saying to the world in general that the season is there to enjoy without laying unneeded pressure on the players.

It's going to be a long haul but as things stand we have the strength in depth to see it through via the play-offs if that's what it comes down to.

Just some waffle really I know, but how I see it.

I think the only one who started tonight who might possibly start on Saturday is Jackson as he was taken off at half time. However, I would expect the team to be those who didn't start.

Disagree jeera. Top 2 is the minimum expectation. Worse case is promotion by play offs. Anything but promotion is a failure this season. And tbh even finishing 3rd is lower than this squad should achieve.

No excuses this time round. If players can't take the expectation then we have recruited wrongly imo but I'm sure those we signed aren't here for a non promotional season.

Correct no side will move aside for us. But no side moved aside for any of the sides who won promotion last season.

Very good post. Sensible approach.

The aim is to have a really successful season, but to just ‘expect’ is lunacy.

Cannot have any room for entitlement that because we are big fish assembling a strong squad that it guarantees success, we’ve been in this division long enough to know that’s not how it works.

It’s a slog, a struggle and a stretch at times, but as you rightfully say, I feel this season will be a good one, and it’s there to be enjoyed.

You re assuming all 6 players are going to
Be successful and football doesn’t work like that. I feel we are still short of a number 10 who can be a playmaker and a good striker. Ladapo is a bit of a gamble, the Not the top 20 podcast put it well about our strikers. If he could go 9 months in the future and tell himself what had happened with
Ipswich he would believe both statements on Ladapo. He’d scored 25 goals or by January he’d fell out with people and left the club. On Jules he would also believe himself if he’d scored 20 goals or he’d been sent back to Arsenal.

Season 2 under this ownership was always for me when we were going to start to have expectations we probably do need to go up for McKenna to keep his job but I feel there at this current time there are teams slightly stronger than us but if we can get a couple of good ones in then we will be looking very strong on paper.

The "no side will stand aside for us" comment is daft. No one ever stands aside for anyone, I don't even know what that means.

Expectation from our owners is absolutely and unquestionably automatic promotion. Nothing else.
And McKenna has assembled a squad that will deliver it. Players with hunger and athleticism , not journeymen and old timers trying to hang on for another season's paychecks.
What gives me the confidence is the pace in our team, especially going forwards - Burns, Edwards, Jackson, JJ, Ladapo, Davis, and Morsy and Aluko surging through the middle. As someone pointed out yesterday, opposition teams can't double mark both Burns and Davis. It's clever (and we are fortunate to have the funds) to be able to recruit enough pacey players to take advantage of the 5 subs situation. There will be no respite, this team is gonna play at 100 mph for 90 minutes, with fresh legs on at half time. I can absolutely see this team just ripping teams apart with the pace we have. And we know how tight our defence is, what was it 6 games without conceding last term?

We don't need anyone to stand aside, we are gonna take it to them and smash this league. COYBs.

The teams with the best players manager and finances tend to be the winners. Many many TWTDers are convinced we have the best players and manager and we clearly have the best finances. Football *does* work like that. Failure this season will be the ruin of our club as the Yanks will sell us to some madman like Ashley. Our club is on a knife edge.

I don't know what you were on last night but you seem to have missed some context and appear to have answered a post that doesn't exist.

No one has suggested we can't or won't end up top two, or even top.

You clearly haven't seen posts such as, "McKenna has this season to save his job". That is the sort of drama we won't be needing if things lag at some point.

If you have and don't think that sort of talk is over the top then I can't help you.

As for standing aside, it's pretty obvious it's not literal isn't it. It's not hard to accept the season is a long one with lots of possibilities along the way.

The money they are putting into the infrastructure of the stadium and buying land around it doesn't tally up with your assessment You don't do that for a sh!t or bust season.

Everything they have said and done has pointed towards a long term investment, not hull a few quid at us and see what happens.

That's what I can't get my head around.

It's like some of us don't learn at all.

Evans came in expecting immediate results and returns and we had years watching that dream burn up.

Short termism doesn't work. We've all said for years the club was rotten from top to bottom and now it's being addressed we have fans demanding the same as before, as though none of that in between happened.

Building might take time but if it brings long term gains then rather that than some absurd sh1t or bust attitude.

You wouldn't believe only a couple of years ago a number of fans thought we were going to continue to slide into oblivion.

Imo there is however a difference between what Ashton would stand for compared to the pension pot who are our owners and not the 3 lions.

Steed has made it very clearly known his interest is seeing his money well spent. He also made a point of wanting to see results not just lots of talk.

If we were championship I'd agree that I'd see a few years of patience due to the sheer amount of investment it now seems to take to get promoted to the prem. However league 1 is not a league we should keep seeing ourselves in every season.

We just finished 11 in division 3 for the second season in a row. We *are* in oblivion.

And to the other poster who mentioned the infrastructure improvements, yes good point, but that’s only catching up on what should have been in place already courtesy of Evans non investment in anything other than lining players agents and managers pockets. And it hasn’t cost much. If we don’t go up and they decide to sell it’ll add a bit to the value of the club and they can leave saying “we leave the club in a much better state than we found it in”.
