I've started syphoning my bathwater (when I occasionally bathe!) out of the window and into a gutter which drains to a water butt. All washing up water ends up on the lawn or undergrowth. Any other ideas? - Collect the tears of Norwich fans? - Put Tory wets through a mangle?

https://www.drought.gov/international This NOAA drought-related website looks quite interesting at first glance. The Vegetation Health Index bit looks grim for France particularly, but I don't know how it is standardised i.e. whether the 'normal' conditions of a given area are taken into account in the favourability rating. Apparently the short range SPI can be related to soil moisture, and the longer range to groundwater and reservoir levels. Again, I don't know what the baseline is per area. NOAA do some good stuff don't they.

Yes, NOAA is a good source in general, I've used it for hurricane related stuff but I've not looked at the drought analysis, I'll take a look when I have some time. SB

Worth mentioning it US climate is also not behaving normally: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/aug/12/california-climate-crisis-megafl "In just the past two weeks, there have been at least four extreme floods in the US, events once cast as 1,000-year storms with a 0.1% likelihood of happening in a given year. Extreme precipitation events have increased by 55% in the north-east since the 1950s, according to the federal government’s national climate assessment, 42% in the midwest, and 27% in the south-east." We’ve been in a couple of different areas of France recently and many rivers seem to be in a sorry state (if they even have any water in them - we’ve seen several dry beds).

I'm guessing that is an effort at satire. A chat began between me and a young barman the other day, commenting in general how in this situation anyone could still be stupid enough to deny anything when lo and behold his boss walked over and started banging on about how it was once the ozone layer, then it was global warming, now this, then there'll be something else... He went on to mention global warming about 5 times ignoring the phrase climate change altogether. We lasted maybe 50 seconds before the swearing began from both of us. He actually said the words "And people like you believed them when we were told we would all be sucked off the planet through the hole in the ozone layer". He then cackled with a knowledgeable self-congratulatory grin whilst I sat in silence trying to digest what I'd just heard. I'd forgotten this is the same guy who doesn't believe humans have been into space or that covid was real. How is it all of these things go hand in hand. I mention Alex Jones but he pretended he'd never heard of him which was weird because he'd quoted him to me in the past.

He did add that Germany aren't as green as people make out, whoever 'people' are. And that making any effort is pointless anyway because China and India...

I think you just have to smile at the tall stories and wild inaccuracies. We had a bloke on here claim he'd built his own climate model despite having no understanding of atmospheric physics. I find those falsely claiming expertise far more dangerous in terms of disinformation and it is surprising how much of this, largely, ideological nonsense goes unnoticed. The majority would like a 'solution' to the climate and ecological problems we face, but that has to be within the bounds of physical reality.

out of interest, who on here claimed to have built their own climate model?

yes, well quite. i'm fairly sure this is rob being weird again. about a month ago i posted that for a new building we modelled the effect of climate change on building performance (interestingly it caused us to use a concrete frame basically because of the cooling effect of thermal mass). rob decided this meant that we'd come up with our own estimates of future temperature / weather patterns due to climate change (!) - obviously the M&E engineers who do this type of thing just take the temperature forecasts from other people's climate change models (that's pretty obvious really isn't it?). rob - there's actually an industry standard for doing this sort of modelling (cibse tm52) - but as i explained i'm on the client side and i'm not an M&E engineer so i claimed no expertise.

Well maybe if there was body to oversee the water industry, and actually have the balls to find said companies for these leaks, rather than allow them to ignore them and pay dividends to shareholders and large salaries to top management instead, then we might get somewhere.
