Disparity in League One 12:39 - Sep 18 with 3404 views | Miaow | Yesterday we played Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough, whilst Morecambe travelled to play Fleetwood in the same division. Football is a funny thing. Us, Wednesday, Derby, Portsmouth, Bolton and Charlton, and then Accrington, Burton, Cheltenham, Fleetwood, Forest Green, etc. I know this is now our fourth season in this division, but I always find the wild differences in size between some clubs to be quite something. Meanwhile, Southend vs Wrexham was a fixture two tiers below those mentioned above. And Bournemouth and Brentford are both in the Premier League.

Disparity in League One on 12:48 - Sep 18 with 3339 views | Illinoisblue | It is a bonkers league. A group of teams who are basically over-achieving non-league clubs and a group of teams who are under-achieving clubs who were/could/should be in championship at the very least. Can’t wait until we’re out of this league.

Disparity in League One on 13:14 - Sep 18 with 3221 views | Superblue95 | There are disparities all over the pyramid to be fair. Size wise nobody would bat an eye lid if you swapped Bournemouth and Brentford for Notts County and Oldham despite the fact there’s 4 divisions between them. We aren’t a particularly big club but are still ‘bigger’ than a quarter of premier league clubs by almost any metric and arguably a similar size to another 3 or 4.

Maybe not quite a quarter since Narwich dropped out again.

Funnily enough, League 2 does still look like a pretty standard 4th division. Only Bradford C. clearly have way better support than most, and only Harrogate and Sutton have non-league grounds. As your respective posts suggest, the real over-achievers are in League 1, and the real under-achievers are in the National League.
Disparity in League One on 20:33 - Sep 18 with 2541 views | Swansea_Blue | Southend’s ground is way too small for the National League. It’s about the same size as Fulham. Wrexham is deceptive. I used to go there a lot when I lived in N Wales. It feels like a big ground, but is only 10k and a bit. But then Bournmouth’s is only 11k. It’s a funny old game.

Disparity in League One on 21:45 - Sep 18 with 2386 views | LeistonBlue | I’ll be honest, it’s probably the only thing I like , along with being in the FA cup first round, about being in this league. I love the chance to visit these clubs/places I’d never otherwise have any reason to go to, and watching football on an old school terrace is a pleasure that is very rarely possible in once you’re up at championship level.

Roots Hall has a capacity of over 12,000. It used to hold over 30,000 until the impecunious owners sold off bits of the huge South Bank terrace & then it was converted into an all-seater.

What sort of crowds did Southend get back in those days? It's a reasonably big Town, have their crowds ever been that notable?

Port Vale's record attendance at Vale Park is just a little under 50,000

Southend used to get crowds of over 10,000 in the post WWII boom. This tailed off, along with many other clubs. Home attendances picked up a little with the advent of Friday night home games in the 1960s. Attendances would typically be 6,000 or so, but this picked up to 10,000 with success and a few years in the second tier. The town has been granted Coty status & with a population of 180,000 it's 50% bigger than Ipswich. I guess proximity ot London has always been an issue & certainly a fair number of locals supported West Ham.

That makes sense, I wasn't sure if it was a Town or City, in fact City status is very recent after the MP was murdered? Tom Hunt was made to look like an even bigger fool, not wanting Ipswich to go for City status only for Colchester then receive City status
