we have a pm with an 80 seat majority but no power at all over her back benchers and almost none over her cabinet. its quite funny really. the threat to remove the whip from anyone who didn't support the tax cut lasted less than 12 hours.

"Ms Mordaunt, who ran against Ms Truss for the party leadership, said she has “always supported” both pensions and welfare payments keeping pace with rising prices."

For "always" read "only most recently".

They're lying to each other now.

On 21 Jan 2013:

it is hardly surprising when you consider less than a 1/3rd of Tory MP's wanted her as leader

This is an interesting question. I was about to post that there must be thousands of women I would rather see mud wrestling than Truss and Mordant, but when I tried to put names to them I realised that I don't want to see any women mud wrestling. Is that limp of me ?

As for a with or without make up fantasy, just so long as it involves standing down as MPs, never running for office again, not even serving as Neighbourhood Watch representatives, then I would be happy.

It's bizarre isn't it?

Yet also predictable when consider how hopeless Truss is, plus how little effort she has put into trying to unite the parliamentary party, eg a cabinet purely of people who supported her.

I'd be happy if Ms Mordant wanted to stand for my local parish council

Pretty blunt way of putting it is this. I'd laugh if it wasn't so bloody serious.

There were no spikes, anywhere

Far better to have stated 'you tried to introduce Brexit, and it caused a massive negative reaction on the 'markets'

I believe the Tory HoC working majority is now 71

I would suggest the race to replace Truss has already begun

Given the way the other teams briefed against Mordaunt during the leadership campaign this is perhaps not a surprise.

Its weird how there suddenly seems to be a gap in the Tory party between the arseholes and utter arseholes. Wonder who wins?

i think it's past the point where there can be a winner - they're going to take each other over the abyss. i'm not sure how long they can sustain the current farce however. even with a huge majority i can't imagine how they can see out another 2 years with an administration which is a weak minority within its own party.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

fingers crossed, but what would be the mechanism where it all came to head / a GE?

it feels a bit like may's end when she couldn't get the back benchers to support her deals. if truss falls can the 1922 committee decide to chose a new leader without going to the party members? and if so does the parliamentary party split? basically i've no idea. i imagine they just muddle through arguing more and more and doing less and less.

So it will be this summer's leadership election all over again ? Who gets a go now ? Badenoch ? Would she last until Christmas ?

In all fairness, they've got the a decade or so of electoral results as evidence to support that view.
