I understand them going for it, but what a waste of money

Not sure it’s 100% “going for it “. Speaking to a Forest fan mate of mine yesterday and he was explaining their issue in terms of out of contract and loan players during their promotion season. Seems they had no much alternative

Either way , I kind of think they’ll be in the smelly stuff coke the start of next season the way it’s going

I mean a quick look at their forum brings up posts like this. Which do not suggest it's 'no alternative'

To me the problem stems from the recruitment, we’ve gone completely overboard with the amount of signings and replaced exciting players who seemed to understand what it meant to play for this club (i.e. Spence, Samba, Garner & Davis) with players who are either past it, not got enough quality to play at this level or just look like they couldn’t care less (Kouyate, Lingard, Boly, Williams, Dennis etc..). While I think there are a few bright sparks like Mangala & Gibbs-White and even Aurier from when he came on tonight, the task of putting together a team now that can compete at this level looks insurmountable.

It's the problem with getting promoted with a base of loanees which you can't convert to permanent. You end up with a different set of players having spent a heap of money just to get the same numbers. Villa had the same problem, but they also had Grealish.

If/when we get there we should invest in the best young players in the Championship rather than one season mercenaries. One season in the PL means 2 years parachute payments, so a 3 year project.

18 months until we have to worry about this problem though.

Rafa Benitez heavily linked. That would be harsh on Cooper having taking over from Chris Hughton 12 months ago with them bottom of the Championship with no winds after 7 games.

I saw from 40 min on and by then they were done.

However, they looked gutless and clueless with more than one player going through the motions. A collection of unhappy strangers. Maybe they’ll get it together, but it doesn’t look likely any time soon.

Cooper might look like a barfly in the Star Wars Canteen, but he’s a good manager and they’re not going to find anyone better. If they’ve any sense, they’ll leave him be.

Completely rebuilding the side in the Premier League seems a really bad idea to me

Especially if you're going to throw money at it, the risks seem incredibly high, are the players they bring in likely to want to stay if they're in the Championship?

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Fulham did something similar after getting promoted through the play-offs in 2018. They brought in a staggering 15 players in the summer, including 5 loans, plus 5 more in the January window. The most expensive players cost £22m, £18m & £15m & of those, only Mitrovic was any good. They went through 3 managers in the season & were relegated by 10 points.

22 new players in one window and paying one of them £200k a week (Lingard) appears a throwing baby out with the bathwater approach.

Cooper didn't have a great deal of say in said recruitment either apparently.

They looked lost night individually and collectively. Not sure how long it’ll go on before the owner pulls the trigger as crazy as it all is. It’s a car crash

Very poor recruitment. Didn't Gibbs-White cost them £30 million? Compare the way they have gone about things to Brighton and Brentwood.

If anything it vindicates the approach of Norwich in that you can't spend your way out of the bottom 3, so don't try. What you do have to do however is attract good quality players for the long term, which they didn't manage to do enough of.

Hopefully we will be in the position to stick or twist when bubbling away in the top 6 of the Championship. You would think if we've managed to keep hold of McKenna we will be a much better position than Forest were when they went up.

It's getting a happy medium 20 plus players is to many in any league unless a new club starting with no one think this Yr we have been far more constructive and in January we may bring a couple in to enhance our promotion push

I think the PL is becoming more and more of a closed shop. Establishing yourself in it now from a lower place is incredibly difficult and there's only really one or two examples, and most of them are only a bad start-to-the-season away from relegation.

Owners have spent heavily & relegation will be a near financial disaster. Talking to Benitez, apparently. Cooper won't last long but he'll get a pay off & a job at a decent Championship club.

It was a strange game though as Forest had 3 clear chances the first at 0-0 so IT WAS one of those footie IF'S !

I missed the first 40 but did see they hit the post. Yes, there is the what if factor, especially as Leicester have been poor this season and confidence must be fragile. It’s going to be a long season for Forest. Not sure it’s going to be that great for Leicester either. They’re to9 reliant on too few players, the crucial ones being Vardy who is fading now and Maddison.

I’ve no problem with Forest as a club. Never have - quite similar to ourselves, albeit with two European Cups to their name. Don’t mind Leicester either, but given the misses’ family all come from there and follow them, I’ve little choice in that,

If we have learnt anything in football you can’t fully judge until end of season however it’s interesting to see how different teams attempt beating the drop. There are too many ifs buts and maybes at this time. If they go down, but have built wage drops into contracts, lose a few high wages and retain a new core they will have a strong second attempt at promotion and then the cycle goes around again! I am assuming all new players costs are forward budgeted against future parachute payments which is different to the problem we experienced when the ITV deal went pop as we fell from the Prem.

All said, it’s not how I would like to see us transition through L1-Championship-Prem but we know we would need significant investment to stabilise in the Champ and make a push for EPL. Further investment to stay in EPL.

Well, you'd know all about teams that are very good at getting relegated form the Premier League...

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.
