Fair play to Morcambe - Some thoughts 08:34 - Oct 10 with 1774 views | RobTheMonk | They gave it a good go. High press, didn't let Ipswich have it all their own way and caused numerous issues. Tired in the second half where Ipswich eventually got a hold of the game, but we were at panic stations towards the end of the game. If I was a neutral, I'd much rather see a team have a go rather than what Cambridge did the other day. I thought the first half was one of the worst we've played for a long time and that was partly due to what I suspect was us not thinking Morcambe were going to press so intensely. I thought defensively we looked a bit off in the first half. Keogh was taking just a tad too long with some passes and nearly got caught out a few times. He was immense in the second half though. Also, and I mention this because it's unusual, but Walton had a few iffy moments. A poor kickout and so nearly a Karius moment when he threw the ball into one of their players. But as I say, not a concern. Davis has really started to show his worth. Donacien is superman. Evans and Morsy were a little subdued first half but in the second Morsy started to run things in the midfield. Morsy dictates the intensity and Evans dictates the pace of passing. Evans is a different player this season and for all the right reasons. The curious case of Conor Chaplin. Fantastic workrate, clever movement, crucial for when we press. Lots of positives. However, his passing was poor and it's not the first time I've said it. It need improving. Edwards is another that has looked a different player. Had glimpses in the first half and then found his groove in the second. I'm not sure we've figured out JJ's best position yet. I think he's a good player myself. Jackson did his usual running in behind and won us a penalty. Gives us an out ball and will knacker out the defenders. Subs were all fine. A game that so nearly was a banana skin; one that we would have lost this time last season. Mckenna and the coaching team have got us playing some good stuff and when we're not, there's now the capacity to grind out results which we've missed probably since the early Mick days. It's amazing what some care and love put into a club can do both on and off the pitch.

From a tactical point of view, you have to give a great deal of credit to their manager because he outsmarted McKenna at first, and they could perhaps count themselves unlucky not to have got something out of the game. But then you have to admire McKenna because he was astute enough to change things mid-half which turned the game. We are very lucky to have him. [Post edited 10 Oct 2022 8:42]

Same can be said for many. Agreed re Chaplin, misplaced many passes and although showed some high quality touches, hasn't been firing of late. Great to see Edwards moving through the gears now. Do think, despite the Cambridge game, he's best used on the left. Wouldn't mind seeing him on the left, Burns on the right and Chaplin/Harness in the hole. Lots to be positive about as others have said and we're not going to have comfortable games every week.

Yeah, we were definitely caught out " expecting a cambridge", in the first half, but as soon as he switched it round and we got Edwards causing havoc on the left, we looked much better.

Chaplin on 09:06 - Oct 10 with 1607 views | unstableblue | Love the guy, one of my favourite players But his form is a little mixed this season, passing and touch a little inconsistent Yet he keeps his place, whilst the probably more effective Harness is rotated I’m sure Chaplin just needs a few goals and further game time… needs an in form Burns to pull defenders off him Burns continues to be hit and miss Amazing where we sit in the table when at times certain players have yet to fire Feel like there’s more in the tank

I think Chaplin's touch and passing has been a bit hit and miss since he joined, but it improved a lot in the last few games of last season and for the first month or so of this season. He explained last season that he was getting used to a new position, but with the improvements. I thought he had mastered it. In more recent games he has gone backwards. I think he just need to calm down a bit, because sometimes it's just to frenetic.

He’s a good player, who can score, pass incisively and gets into the thick of the action Perhaps just needs a bit more time and space to be effective

Fair play to Morcambe - Some thoughts on 12:46 - Oct 10 with 1190 views | jayessess | Morecambe did really well springing a surprise. It seemed to be that we expected them to set up in a low block and defend their penalty area, but they went man for man and pressed relatively high instead. Their best one-on-one defender (Gibson) successfully shackled Edwards for the first 30 minutes and we really struggled to play through them. It's become a bit of a cliché that we find it difficult to play against teams that sit in but I think thus far this season teams that have set up to defend deep have fared much worse against us than teams that press from the front and get in our faces.

It's games like Saturday's where we really see the cleverness (or not) of a manager. He's admitted that Morecambe played a different game to what he expected and what he'd prepped the players for - so top marks for the Morecambe boss. But KM really showed what he's made of by being able to identify what was going on and make the changes midway through a half to not only nullify but to also change the momentum in our favour. massive credit to him.

It's obviously great that McKenna able to improvise, but it's also excellent that we're good enough to force opposition teams to try something different. Morecambe clearly didn't fancy their chances with a low block and decided that if they were brave and pushed forward they might have a puncher's chance of beating us. If lots of teams decide to do that, that'll open up games for us and they won't all have the kind of good day Morecambe were having.

Those are fair points I think. I also thought Donacien, who I think has been outstanding all season, was pretty poor defensively on Saturday. Thought he was far too easily outmuscled by Stockton for the chance that went narrowly wide (also thought it was a handball followed by a foul) and got his positioning totally wrong for the "offside goal" where he was ball watching rather than being aware of the runner coming into the space on his right. He also seemed far more reluctant to get forward when Burns was not playing in front of him.
Fair play to Morcambe - Some thoughts on 14:35 - Oct 10 with 905 views | hatch | Yeah thought they played to the best of their ability and if they’d stuck in for the start of the second half then they could have frustrated us and run down the clock. Three happenings for me on Saturday: - fist bumped Greg Leigh at Euston who then didn’t get off at Lancaster, assume chauffeur from Preston? - met the new (third) team analyst who has just joined from Bolton. Gave him a lift to Morecambe. - found out after the game that my friend’s best mate was the ref on Saturday. I’ve fed back some praise which makes a nice change.
Fair play to Morcambe - Some thoughts on 14:53 - Oct 10 with 860 views | SamWhiteUK | I had to listen to the Morecambe commentators who spent the whole game banging on about luck, ie. "ah if we were top of the league that's the sort of thing that would have crept in" etc. Got very tiresome. Anyway, the reason I mention this is that after Walton's poor kick, they described him as being a decent keeper but not having very good distribution. Plonkers.
Fair play to Morcambe - Some thoughts on 15:25 - Oct 10 with 765 views | Exiled2Surrey | We are such a good side when the ball is on the turf on our own ground - you saw that against Cambridge - but we are going to have to adapt not only to the opposition's playing style, but also their pitches as the winter months progress. Chaplin in particular, with his deflections and quick passing to open up space in crowded areas, feels like a player who plays so much better when the ball is rolling true. You saw on a number of occasions on Saturday that the ball did not seem to run true on the grass. Which made me think of what is still to come with our fixtures - and I think it is good news. The pitches that I think we are likely to come a cropper on in the NW of England or from the lower league teams, I think we generally play at less winter-y times of year. We have ticked off the away games at Burton, Accrington, Morcambe, Shrewsbury. Of the other clubs that might have less high quality surfaces, we have Cheltenham and Peterborough (will their pitch still resemble a beach in the winter?) in April, and we have Fleetwood in May, so those should be OK by then, hopefully. TBH, I am not sure our rivals have it that much worse than us, but it is good to get those games out of the way
Fair play to Morcambe - Some thoughts on 17:52 - Oct 10 with 618 views | Bluespeed225 | Out of the three games last week, Saturdays was the most important one. We won it, adapted to the opposition and changes in the team. Portsmouth and Cambridge were as expected, though I expected Pompey to be better. Morecombe was the sort of result that can really breed confidence through the Club, fans included!
