Update from the pub coal face. 16:04 - Nov 25 with 5622 viewscatch74

If you haven’t heard Heineken are going with a big price hike in January.
If you don’t know their brands it’s the likes of Kronenberg, Amstel, Fosters, Moretti. I imagine that’ll equate to a 50p a pint price rise to for pubs to cover this - more if tied. I thankfully don’t use Heineken.

Costs off the top of my head that have affected us over the year.
7% increase on all alcohol products - this was pre energy crisis so more to come clearly.
Business rates for next year - £1200 a month - we had full rate relief during lock downs and then been paying £600 month this year.
Meat - particularly chicken (30%), probably 20% rise all told.
VAT - this time last year we had a reduced rate on food sales 12.5% - my VAT for this quarter last year was £8500, this year £21000 - from very slightly higher sales .
Coffee - 20% rise
Fish - maybe conservatively 20%. Our food specials are so much more limited, there are just so few dishes we can cost out that would sit at the right level for our pub.
Cooking oil - doubled in price .
Veg maybe least affected but I’d say 10%.
We’ve streamlined, found a new butcher with good produce and good price - but we’ve taken our custom away from the local village butcher - which I really didn’t like. I’ve found a new supplier and playing off prices with current on alcohol supply. We’ve put our prices up but they’ll need to go up again in spring - let’s see what joys the budget brings.

We’re a strong business and we’re getting through this but I can see carnage, particularly with tied pubs next year (a lot of big companies are merely offsetting the costs of their borrowing against their estates as things stand) when interest rates go up again.

Adnams Southwold Bitter and Adnams Old are both still only £3.40/pint in my local!

Disaster capitalism, plain and simple. The system is no longer fit for purpose.

That latest Adam Curtis Soviet Union documentary had some dark parallels.

I haven't really noticed pub prices for a long time now, but the long weekend back in Suffolk where I had a funeral / night out with Snr and his mates / day in and out of the Greyhound either side of Cheltenham did make me think beer and food had gone up lots.

Maybe being away from home made it more noticeable but it felt like every swipe of the card was a little bit richer than I remember. Certainly feeling it at the supermarket, but it's on everything.

Hope you're able to do good business this festive season as the lull on the other side might be really prolonged mightn't it?

Cheers Mullet, should easily beat last year in December (it was absolutely wrecked by Covid - it was no lockdown from govt, so no support but advice to not to go to any Christmas gatherings - wonderful.) We’re always quiet Jan/Feb - so April budget is key, feel
they’ll need to do something for hospitality, we do contribute tax wise and employment wise.
Imagine it’s pretty tough with you guys too.

Part of me was hoping Wetherspoons would implode, but cheap booze is a big draw for so many people that it's not realistic. But the proper family run pubs seem few and far between now.

I didn't think anything could be as bad as lockdown, but to be honest the damage it's done is hard to quantify.

Academically kids have so many gaps. Emotionally and socially they are far more problematic and I've never known parents to be so openly abusive until you get them face to face.

Nationally there is all sorts of problems. You know when it gets bad you get those "teaching's a laugh" adverts everywhere. Strikes are no doubt coming and it's not some radical fringe, it's people who have lost tens of thousands and can't take being disrespected any longer.

Thoughts with you, just have a 12 and 15 year old has been taxing, so can’t imagine how being responsible for classes of them during the last few years has been. Completely understand if action needs to be taken, things need to change.

Regarding the tied houses, if the projected fall in property prices over the next couple of years does actually come to pass, do you think some tied houses will survive because their business model is now more attractive than the pub/property company selling up at a loss ?

35 years ago I would be in my local. Local...remember those. I was in the darts team, pool team, wasn't any good, and would often have a light lunch their. I knew who would be there and at what time. Most of my disposal income was spent there as was my mates. It was the weekend and that was all that mattered. Even when I was married we enjoyed our local as often as the pennies allowed. How times have changed. Beer was king, food was secondary, people stay in now unfortunately.

I got an electric bill the other day for a new place we have in Cannock, it was under £400 and I thought, wow, that's cheap. We have no history to compare it against.

Today I get an email saying that the bill was incorrect and we attach your new one.......... £3,700 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WTF!!!

I think it is for two month but even so!

I briefly looked at it, chucked it on Beth the Breasts desk and decided to look at it with her tomorrow.

My cousin is so relieved she got out of the licenced trade in September 2019. It was tough then, and that was before the pandemic.

On the other hand, the pub we used to drink at as students in Manchester charged 20p a pint in 1974.

Yep - you can watch sport at home on your own big screen, buy any alcoholic drink in at a fraction of the price - even draught systems now, ready made meals from the supermarket or delivered to the door. It’s easy to stay at home and have the pub experience - just without the interaction with those locals etc. that you wouldn’t necessarily meet outside those four walls. You can even pick up the trades/ contacts etc online that you would have benefited from going to the pub.
Shame - great times and probably pretty healthy mentally if not physically!

I wonder - a heard a couple of the big companies owed more than they owned already. So as you say the only way for them to keep going is taking the rent and the mark up on the beers.

A good year 1974.
Sensible of your cousin. I’m thinking we’re in a fairly affluent area, should be fairly well protected. The concern is this is just the start.

Over 8 grand for the two per quarter?

A possible 32 thousand per year for energy?

On her retirement Greene King sent round John Wark to her with a bottle of champers, which was nice.

Sadly not - to be fair they’re still trying to work out how the support from the govt will change that. Although it’s a bit scary it’s taking this long.

That's a terrifying amount.

Can only wish you and your counterparts well and spend a bit here and there in support.

I have always been a pub person, although not so much these days admittedly.

I do still put in the odd takeaway order with the local just to put some cash their way and made a point of using them through lockdown for that very purpose. It's not enough for some places though and it's plain to see which are struggling.

In usual times, so to speak, they can ride out a few quiet days here and there but now the pressure is on to get money through the door and it's just not happening for some of them.

The authorities don't care and I'm sure many companies are still happy to see a few go wayside in order to capitalise on the buildings/property side of things.

Problem is, you can only borrow money when you don't need it.

If you actually need a cash injection you are likely to fail the credit test.
