The drooling over Messi was embarrassing, you'd have thought he'd just dribbled around the whole side and slammed one in the top corner, not passed a ball in the bottom corner of the net, which I may add was by a magician and no other player would have been able to accomplish. Danny Murphy's wrists must be aching.

They still are.

The two things I took from his performance tonight were:

1 the rest of the team are not that special;
2 he isn't as good as Maradona who finished the mazy run by beating another defender and scoring (and against a better defence). Of course, he still has a chance to single-handedly beat the Dutch but he isn't yet there.

there is no denying he is a very very special player, but at 35 like Ronaldo he is now past his prime. The goal was nothing special imo and his performance was decent but hardly world breaking.

Imagine if he had scored a goal similar to Celina’s lob last season from the edge of the penalty area?

They would’ve had a life times worth of w**k material.

This thread is strange. That was an elite footballing perfomance.

That goal was simple because he made it look simple, the touch the movement. Incredible. The drooling was deserved

He always has more focus on him as he's been and still an incredible player. Therefore when he has a really good game it gets highlighted more than if an average player has a good game. But he did have a really really good game.

On a side note the atmosphere from the argentine fans was something else.

They conveniently ignored him giving the ball away in the last minute when Australia almost scored.

Maradona was nearly 10 years younger when he scored that goal, and Messi has scored plenty like it in the past. Phenomenal player really.

A bit like how some on here would go completely overboard on Celina when he made a 5 yard pass? 🤔

They were at it half an hour before kick in the studio and Danny Murphy was at it the second the game kicked off.

He had a good game but they’d have been obsessing over him even if he didn’t. It was extremely over the top and really quite cringeworthy. The whole ‘he has to win this World Cup’ narrative the BBC are running with is quite pathetic also, particularly when it’s pretty unlikely Argentina are going to triumph.

My hobbies include being quiet during trips, clapping with songs, and diabetes.

Sometimes when a player is as good as that you just have to except it’s always going to be about him.

It’s not like he’s been rubbish and they were making all about him, he’s been one of the standout players at the World Cup so far. I thoroughly enjoyed the analysis and getting to watch highlights of Messi. Seems I’m in minority though tbf

I'm thinking that post must be satirical or tongue-in-cheek, albeit I can't place it confidently as didn't listen to the commentary tonight.

Marking a player down for not matching the iconic goal of another player's career in a solitary match would be fruit-loop thinking wouldn't it! No matter one's views on the debate.
