This is Russell Howard saying what we already know but in a comical way which makes it watchable. I'm going to add that TWTD is itself a microcosm of social media woke wars as a few posters seem to engage in the same BS.
Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?
The strangest thing is that people think this is new, that there were no rabble-baiting populist papers in the old days, printing dubious stories to sell copy. Look up https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horatio_Bottomley . It's been going on since before the modern newspaper or party politics was invented, through broadsheets, song and rumour.

Is the fact that it has existed for centuries a sound argument for it to continue?

debates about culture / etiquette / morality are as old as time. it's healthy. he's right that it's a small minority actively involved. he's right that media and social media benefit from amplifying division. what he ignores, and what's new, is the individuals and groups on the left and right who also very actively and aggressively promote and police these divisions. we have small shouty groups who make public discussion pretty unpleasant for the vast majority in the middle. the recent reith lecture on self-censorship (chimamanda ngozi adichie) is a brilliant listen.
And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

One problem is that the so-called centre is increasingly filled with right-wingers and/or those with no solutions. They’ll point out how bad Trump or Farage etc. are but they aren’t particularly interested in changing anything by addressing the underlying problems that the populist right feed off.
People wonder why the UK is in such a state. It’s mostly because we have a history of non-representative politicians of all colours looking to represent the status quo rather than the people of the UK. And it’s the populists who then appear to have the anti-establishment position and cure for society’s ills but that’s just a facade to promote themselves and their agenda to ignorant people.
Any remotely evidence-based analysis of our society and economy would indicate there are massive failings and massive opportunities for improvement. And yet we’re having discussions about cultural wedge issues that are almost entirely in the minds of the people with the most to say and the biggest pots to bang.

as ever your problem is that you know nothing about "the people of the uk". you think you and your bubble are typical. until you take some interest in the world beyond your bubble your take on politics is pretty irrelevant. the electorate is never going to be good enough for you.

That's a poor and rude reply to a thoughtful post.
I've seen you accuse others you disagree with of living in a bubble a lot. Perhaps you could describe your bubble, or your experience that leads you to consider yourself to be 'typical' and deeply knowledgeable about the people of the UK.
Because it's hard to imagine that your bubble is particularly diverse up in Laxfield or wherever to be honest. I mean, it's easy to picture you having tea on the regular with weathly white retired types while congratulating yourselves for being cool with the next village over having a female vicar. But that doesn't sound particularly typical of the UK to me. Not that there's even such a thing as "typical" in the UK.
I'm sure that's wide of the mark in reality, and that you may well mix with all sorts of people in your village, but I'm just highlighting the silliness of what you've done to DK in making your assumptions. You may not like what others believe, but it doesn't invalidate their own experiences.
