Question for overseas fans regarding the England match. 18:30 - Dec 12 with 2315 views | MattinLondon | I know that there’s a fair few overseas fans in this forum - just wondering what the consensus was regarding the England v France match? Did they think that the better team won or whether England were unlucky? Thanks.
Question for overseas fans regarding the England match. on 20:56 - Dec 12 with 2206 views | kiwiblue | It was finely balanced but the missed penalty was a killer. I thought the French aggression maybe unsettled our players and the referee didnt help with not being stronger with the blatant aggression from the French defense. If it had gone to extra time we would have won as we were getting them rattled..
Question for overseas fans regarding the England match. on 21:54 - Dec 12 with 2140 views | SE1blue | Most of the thoughts and match reports in Toronto (and Canada) felt it was a very even game, with France just being that bit more clinical. Many comments on how it really could’ve gone either way and how england now look like a team who can comfortably go toe to toe with the top nations and not just hope to have an above normal performance in order to win. Pundits here were very impressed with Rice, Bellingham and Maguire.

Question for overseas fans regarding the England match. on 10:23 - Dec 13 with 1852 views | ElephantintheRoom | As a French resident it made for uncomfortably realistic viewing before and after the match. In these parts they are noticeably keener on the rugby World Cup - but one major paper thought only Kyle Walker would make a combined team which is probably not far off the mark. Basically they expected to win and England hoped to win. So nobody was overly surprised when France won

Didn't most of us think that after the equaliser though?

Very little between the teams, but France were never behind & scored 2 more goals from open play than England. Fine margins, but no basis for saying England would probably have gone on to win the game. Most football fans hope or expect that their team will win a close game. If France go on to win the tournament, this will elevate the status of England's performance to another heroic failure.

I think I was in a minority but I felt France upped it when they needed to and we couldn't really deal with them when they actually went forward with purpose. I personally think even with the equaliser. They'd have gone on to win 3 2.

Question for overseas fans regarding the England match. on 10:57 - Dec 13 with 1784 views | leitrimblue | In the West of Ireland most thought France were easily the better team and a French victory was never in doubt. Harry Kanes penalty miss is generally seen as the funniest thing most people had seen for weeks.( I'm still receiving 'hilarious' Gifs, cartoons etc )

What's the reaction been like to Ireland's biggest game in a decade being an England match?

Ireland biggest games recently are always England matches. I did try to convince a few people just prior to kick off that it would be morally right to support England over goal cheat Thierry Henry's France but didn't win many over...

That must be so depressing. Can't say I know what it's like to have to force myself to support whoever is playing someone else on the biggest stage of world football. Reminds me a little of the Ipswich & Colchester relationship. Guess us England supporters have been spoilt that we generally always qualify for these things, and lately have progressed to the latter stages. Ireland should try it, it's so fun. There's a whole generation of Irish who won't have any memories of watching your lot at a world cup, it's criminal really.

This is how I imagine it was for Scotland. Going to the pub every England match desperately hoping someone would beat us. It's pitiful really.

You're OK then, you've seen your side participate. I think the next WC has a lot more teams in it so maybe Ireland / Scotland etc might qualify. TBH I hope they do, my wife & inlaws are Irish and therefore my children are half Irish. Have to say her family were supporting England (at least they said they were). Will be a different story when the 6 Nations and rugby world cup comes around of course.

Isn't it just football, and is it really any different from wanting Norwich to lose, whoever they play? And don't forget that in the 70s, the boot was on the other foot, with Scotland qualifying for World Cups, and England not. Indeed, the overall record of each team in England/Scotland games is not that dissimilar, so any Colchester/Ipswich comparison isn't really valid. [Post edited 13 Dec 2022 12:22]

At least they said they were .My partners Spanish so kids have option of England, Ireland or Spain luckily. I have no interest in rugby so usually refuse to play the Englishmen when it's on. Much to the disappointment of my friends and neighbours
Question for overseas fans regarding the England match. on 17:43 - Dec 13 with 1443 views | Bramidan | Wife’s Welsh, kids obviously half and half, does that count? Watched a bit of the game ( not all) because we were out at a Christmas do, so open to criticism but when a pass went to a French player they were on the front foot. When you watch England play it’s sideways or backwards. If the receiving player is not in a position to move forward it is all negative and opponents soon realise they are comfortable.

So comfortable they had to concede two, if not three penalties

Its OK, they are satisfied to know you are English when we beat you. As an Irishman I think England were unfortunate not to win and were the best team for a large portion of the game. You were unlucky with a referee that did not regard tackles on Saka as fouls. It would have been an entirely different game if cards were shown earlier in the match as Saka's pace was killing the French.
