Glass half full and empty, Hirst and Bonne... 18:06 - Dec 17 with 3193 viewsjasondozzell

Two ways of looking at today and last month or so. We've done pretty well to stay consistent and keep ourselves at the top after a really pretty awful run of injuries. Think many teams would suffer a big dip in similar situation but we have coped with losing amongst others a first choice CM in Evans who controls our play and Harness who was excellent in first half of season. We are still dominating possession and the understanding of how we play is great though the squad - KVY coming in for JD is great example. Humphreys has done brilliantly coming in and looks such an exciting prospect. It's a tough ask for someone so young to keep it up though and I thought it was one of his poorer games today. Arguably it was his lack of physicality that led to goal - he shrugged off a bit too easily. Harsh but perhaps inevitable that it would catch up with us at some point I think KMac has to be praised for dealing with such a difficult period.

However, we've definitely lost some of the spark of earlier in season. Are we beginning to see reason why Hirst was pursued as a target? I love Ladapo - he holds ball up so well and he's scored goals despite not always starting. He's obviously worked hard to learn the single striker role and done well. He's not quite ruthless enough in front of goal though and hasn't got the predatory instinct that we are maybe missing. Aluko played him in at end with a nest through ball and he was slow anticipating it. Again a bit harsh on him perhaps but I think we need someone who can turn the half chances that we produce regularly (Leif and Burns put so many balls across the box) into full chances.

Striker is number one target in Jan. I know I'll get ridiculed for saying it, but I'd have Bonne back in a heartbeat...

I agree we need a striker. Bonne would be fine & while he isn't currently in the QPR match day squad, they are in the play offs so they might prefer to keep him, but he's out of contract in the summer so he could be available for a small fee. One goal in his last 36 games is a bit of a worry, though.

Yeah. It would definitely be a gamble. Have to hope that he could recapture the form he started last season with. In fairness to him he was obviously having a tough time personally and then when KMac came.in he never really settled on one striker so he didn't have that much of a run.

It could be a smart move. He has something . Could suit both parties. Either way, we need someone.

Two or three strikers would be preferable as a couple are bound to get injured.

Charlie Austin is a free agent. Veteran striker who knows where the net is. Would be a great late-game sub to bring on.

Someone like that who can sniff a chance out is what we need. I suspect McKenna would prefer to take a player with a view to development and looking ahead to next season etc.. but needs must at the moment and I think we have to be a bit pragmatic.

I really do think Bonne would make a lot of sense.

Exactly right; needs must. We simply HAVE to get up this season. We have to smash the fk out of this transfer window and then smash the fk out of the remaining league games.

Agreed. Not getting up when we've been in such control all season would be nightmare. I think McKenna does see this as a project but he's clearly.working below his true level and another season in league one is surely not part of the masterplan. I don't think the Americans are messing around. Got to hope we'll strengthen as much as is possible.

We play fantastic football but I don't think we're a play off side if that makes sense. A one off shoot out doesn't suit us. We are about consistency and principles.

If we fail, a good chunk of the squad will break up and, you’d assume, crowds would drop considerably. Imagine August 2023 and first game of season is Accrington at home on the back of a playoff defeat. That will sting like never before. We have to use all means, fair and foul, to get promoted.

I'm coming round more and more to the Conor Wickham punt as a low risk option till the end of the season......Should this team be successful though I do see major surgery being required for a step up. We would however had a good selection of saleable successful League 1 players available.

I think only Walton, Woolf, Burgess, Davis, Morsy & Evans could handle the Champ. As you say, some major overhaul if we do go up.

Two strikers in, Jackson out. We have to kill games off & be more ruthless.

Bonne 😂😂😂 mr offside! No thanks from me, he is worse then Ladapo, the reason his scoring dried up after McKenna arrived is because he’s not a McKenna type player

If I was being over indulgent and not thinking about squad unity,

Right Back
Centre Midfielder possibly 2 to share load with Morsy/Evans
2 attackers / 1 10 and 1 that can be a striker like what we lost from TJJ

I’m open minded, El Miz, Piggot could both be part of the mix but probably not. Bonne could be reunited with Burns which was pretty clinical for a time.

I can’t help thinking if we continue with a more consistent 4231 we don’t have the left sides Burns either, and we can’t expect to have it all our way, teams are finding ways to block us therefore we will need new ways to break teams down in the second half of the season.

Whilst I think it’s pretty clear we need a striker, it’s pretty pointless if McKenna is only going to give them 10 minutes at the end of games.

We’ve not even seen Ahadme have a proper start in the league yet, having only played 55 minutes since signing. (I know his injury hasn’t helped him). Pigott didn’t really get a chance under the McKenna system either, IIRC.

I know it’s easier said than done, but just wish we had someone to stand inbetween the posts and get on the end of crosses / cut-backs. The amount of cut-backs we produce, we seem to never score a tap-in, multiple times yesterday, Ladapo was just stood static at the back post. (I thought his hold up play was excellent yesterday, mind).

We've not been outplayed by anyone in the league this season and have dominated possession and territory in almost of every game. We should be 10 points clear.

Problem is that while we have the ball most of the time we simply can't defend when we don't have it, so many cheap goals have been given away. There are also times where we pin teams back but just don't manage to carve out that clear cut chance - start of the second half yesterday was a prime example.

Hopefully KM has some signings up his sleeve to address this because it would be criminal to finish outside the top2 when we dominate almost every game.

I like Collins was talking about himself few weeks back. Contracted till 2025 I believe. Would be a costly one. For me if we are going to spend X millions that player has to be championship quality and ready. I like Collins though. I personally think we will revisit Hirst (Loan). Let’s see.

It’s going to be very tough to get the right players we need in Jan. it’s always a difficult transfer window as clubs don’t want to offload their best players and make their own situation any worse so we are left with young loan players from the PL like TJJ or more senior players like Austen who are free agents or are happy to drop a league like Keogh and Aluko.

We ought to be strengthening for a final promotion push but what happens if we don’t succeed. It’s a hell of a gamble and I’m not sure KM thinks that we need many new additions anyway.

If we can get our injured players back and replace TJJ with another young striker from the PL, that might just be enough.

If a striker is "Champion ship quality & ready" either we can't afford him or he probably wouldn't want to come to Town. This is a problem with being in this league, so we sign a player like Ladapo, who is fine, but not perfect.

We did create chances last season, but unfortunately they invariably came to nothing because Bonne had drifted offside. That's the problem with the KM style the forward needs to judge when to make the run and based on last season Bonne lacks the footballing brain to understand that.
