Set Play Improvements 21:36 - Dec 27 with 2898 views

I saw a Twitter post musing on the value of set piece specialist coach. I knew our totals were very good this season but here is the comparison

2021/22 (Whole season)
Set Piece Set Piece Shots 129
Set Piece xG 11.01
Set Piece Goals 9.

22/23 (Half Season)
Set Piece Shots 119
Set Piece xG 7.81
Set Piece Goals 12

Obviously goals is the most important metric but but to be close or surpassing every single one in half the time is quite ridiculous. Charlie Turnbull is definitely earning his money!

I'm surprised the top teams don't have coaches for everything.

Delap throw in coach
Beckham free kick coach
Lampard shooting from outside the box coach

Etc etc.

Equally it could just be that Davis has excellent delivery compared to what we were serving up last season.

I am sure a dedicated coach can't hurt though.

I think pretty much everything has improved this season. None of it is due to chance, either. The club is being run properly and that is refreshing.

Davis delivery was particularly good yesterday - considering the state of the corner areas, North Stand particularly. Roll on the new pitch...

There's no need/point in putting xtraGullible numbers in these things. Nobody knows what the heck they are supposed to mean, let alone the validity of comparing such figures.

With Davis and Evans on the pitch we have great set-piece delivery with both left and right foot. And we’ve made that run to the near post and low cross work well on a few occasions so we seem to have a few more ideas.

Ironically we’re still to see a goal-scoring centre half emerge or even a decent share across all the defenders. We used to get that in the past from players like Tommy Smith, Berra and Chambers so there’s even room for improvement if and when the defenders start weighing in.

The flip side of that is that Burgess, Woolfenden and Edmundson threaten enough to let players like Chaplin or Harness pop up in the right place. But can’t help thinking that a few more headed efforts (and more of a threat in their own right from the CBs) would unsettle defences even more.

A third of our 12 set play goals in the League have come from our centre backs with Woolf and Edmundson having 2 league goals each. . Only one from a header but they've got in there and won the 2nd ball.

It would be good to see some more CB goals but I don't think their return is that poor so far.

Woolf's driving run and extra body in attack was a key part of one of our goals on Monday.

Absolutely - far better than the guff Evans was serving up last year.

Couldn’t help but laugh at the commentary on iFollow against Oxford, the ball got laid back to Evans on the right hand side (during general play not a set piece) and the commentator said ‘laid back to Evans for one of his trademark crosses’ - as he proceeded to underhit it and the first defender was able to head clear. Evans is a damn fine player and was close to my MoM on Boxing Day - but his crossing and set pieces are woeful.

That surprised me as I hadn’t really felt much threat from there. But I agree that they’re there also to win the second balls and generally cause problems others can exploit.

I still want to see a towering, thumping header in the 6-yard box.

I don't think our defenders are that type of player, and even having the added height of Burgess in recent weeks hasn't made a difference. Indeed, it is perhaps ironic that the best thumping header this season came from Walton.
