This has only been dealt with due to Neidle’s determination, nothing to do with any shift. He’s hung on for an uncomfortably long period of time despite what’s been in the public domain. It’s got to the point where Rishi had no choice, this wasn’t going to go away. Ultimately, he's still had to fire him, which was always inevitable, so it'll upset a particular faction of the party but he's waited so long and been so hesitant to act that it reinforces the perception he's too weak to lead. The Tories continue to be mired in scandal after scandal, desperately trying to cling to power through balancing the demands of various factions within the party, and all the while the country is rudderless and has long since forgotten what it was like to be governed by competent individuals who actually show at least a passing interest in trying to improve people's lives. Really think after the next GE there needs to be some mechanism to hold those who have presided over the last 3-4 years of shambolic, corrupt government genuinely accountable for their actions. |  |

The Whips were always the de facto ethics gatekeepers as reputation meant something to a party. Lying was an instant resignation offence because at least the appearance of the truth was much more important.
I think it's interesting that even trying to deflect responsibility to an external body hasn't helped them this time. It's is also not helping Raab. I would argue the Gray report helped take some of the sting put of that investigation and could well pave the way for Johnson to return sometime in the future.
I suspect the next scandal that comes along will be dealt with in the old fashioned 'need to spend time with the family' way and they go into political purgatory for a while rather than sitting it out in the cabinet. [Post edited 29 Jan 2023 10:19]

Anyway, this feels like the death throes of the Major government. Surely the next election should be a landslide for Labour, akin to 1997, so why do I have my doubts? Possibly because I’m not enamoured by them in the slightest so have doubts about, whilst unquestionably being the better of the option of the two, whether they’d really bring the change the country needs. | |

It's been the case since 2017 that the Tories - and thus the country - have been hostage to the ERG, which is a bunch of fringe nutters who would be in UKIP if UKIP had a chance of electoral success. 2019 made things worse as Johnson purged the party of moderates and brought in a load of awful borderline far-right simpletons, which just increased the power base of that faction within the Tory party. Those who have been in government a bit longer are now just rinsing the country for anything they can get, knowing that they are stuffed at the next election. We've had the worst possible government at the worst possible time. COVID, Brexit, and the war in Ukraine all required sensible and competent leadership, not internal battles and self-serving charlatans. | |

Quite. History has very much been rewritten on that one. If May's own party and coalition partners had voted with her then the Brexit deal would have gone through in the Spring of 2019. And it was a less damaging deal than the one Johnson and his second rate chancers ended up with. | |
