Slightly off topic but in the same universe ... I just noticed on flashscores that the Birmingham v Blackburn replay is this tuesday ... is that an error on their part or have we gone back to the good old days of replays a few days after the initial match ending in a draw ?

Ha I saw that earlier and thought it may have been a mistake but no it’s true, I checked Blackburns Twitter..

The good old days? You might be right, but I have been watching Ipswich for 54 years, and I don't remember replays being that quick??

They always used to be in the midweek straight after the first game. It changed maybe 30 years ago, when the police said they needed an extra week to sort out staffing and whatnot.

Yes, replays were definitely staged the midweek after the original game in olden days.
My first season was 1970-71 and I remember going to three FA Cup replays at Portman Road, we beat Newcastle and West Bromwich Albion before losing to Stoke in front of a 30,000 plus crowd....all three a few days after the original game.
I'm sure that it's only in the last 10 to 20 years that the gap between the original game and the replay has wideneded to a week and a half.

I went to all the games for ipswich v Leeds 1974-75.
We played at home for first game on a Saturday and then I think we played at Leeds on Tuesday night. Had to bunk off work the next day as didn't get home till about 6 in the morning. So only 3 days between.
Then to Filbert Street a couple of weeks later for the second replay on the Tuesday night and 2 days later on the Thursday night for the third reply,
As far as I remember, there were still Saturday games either side of those last 2 replays too - so 4 games in 8 days!
Edit....
Out of curiosity, I've just looked online about that season. It's quite unbelievable that between 8th March - 12th April that year, we played 13 league and cup games in 39 days only losing once ( the ill-fated FA cup semi at Stamford Bridge). An important game every 3 days!

And no such thing as a squad rotation lol. Plus I recall the “ queue” literally from Ipswich to Filbert St on what was the old A45 (from memory, although that’s fading !)… twtd .

Not just no rotation but would have been 1 sub then as well wouldn't it?
No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Yes, it took ages to get anywhere then!
Also the queues for the cup tickets were huge - stretching right round the outside of the ground. If my memory serves me right, the tickets were sold from an office somewhere near where the players park their cars and people queued sometimes from the early hours just to make sure they got a ticket for the cup games.

That's right, I'd forgotten about only one sub. As for rotation, we always knew the first 11 as they held their postions week in week out, generally only changing for any injuries.

That must be because Blackburn have a game the following Monday on Sky so they would have had to postpone that.
Maybe sense has prevailed!
In the good old days, the replay would be the following Tuesday, and if that was a draw, the 2nd replay was often 2 days later on the Thursday with a coin toss to decide the venue.

Blackburn and Birmingham are playing on Sky during replay week, Blackburn on Monday and Birmingham on Friday. Must have had an early agreement for a quick turnaround.
