Oh dear, he really was part of out 70’s childhoods for us sport loving kids. I remember him telling me that ‘Aston Villas go down at Ipswich’ in 75’ after telling me they were 2 up, and also that the Millwall game was being held up, which set my Mum on edge as my Dad had gone to the game. RIP Dickie.

I was at both those!
As others have said Dickie Davies was part of permanent things in one’s childhood. Wimbledon (boring), Grandstand, Match of the Week, World of Sport, Ken Walton, Motorcross, Sportsnight with Coleman, Harry Carpenter, the rugby with Bill McClaren, Quizball, Question of Sport and Call my Bluff with Frank Muir and that miserable git.
Then there was Radio 2 with the legendary Peter Jones doing the commentary with Edelston and Bryon Butler. Proper commentary that made feel you were at the game, even if you were listening on a rubbish 70s radio.
RIP Dickie

Can smell the cigarettes and tea in my grandad’s living room, watching the results come in on a Saturday afternoon, marveling at the army of women clanking away on their typewriters in the background. TWTD
