My laptop has just stopped me from allowing access with a message on the screen, supposedly from 'Microsoft Secure Services', giving a helpline phone number to ring. Also an aural message in an electronic voice saying that my IP address has been used to visit website(s) containing ID theft virus.
The message onscreen says that the detected threat is trojan spyware.
First off, do not ring that number. If it was a genuine number, you'd be able to google it and see if it was microsoft, however I'm 99.9%certain it won't be theirs.
As for the message about losing data, it's very likely lying. It's much easier to create a popup that lies about deleting your data and hoping it fools some people than actually creating malware which can get access to your files. Did it pop up out of the blue or while you were on a browser?

Exactly, Google that number and you will very likely find yourself taken to one of those “who called me?” sites, where you’ll see a long list of hundreds of people who’ve been scammed by this.
The phone number is probably one of those high cost numbers so just phoning it and connecting for a few seconds will probably add £50+ cost to your phone bill.

I don't have any biscuits but the tea was very refreshing.
Have now switched back on and all seems to be okay - issue resolved.
Thanks to all who offered advice, suggestions.
Malwarebytes is a good suggestion from someone earlier cleans up grotty stuff. Definitely worth emptying your browser cache and data, otherwise is likely to keep displaying it at random points
This is basically what you are dealing with. Ignore the garish thumbnail and the loud electronic music inside the first music, the video shows you the people that run identical scams and a friendly Irish fella who is hell bent on bringing them down.
