The sport is definitely struggling isn't it. AJ v Whyte . What is the point. Nobody is going to pay for that. Boxing is my second sport after football but is doing itself no favours. https://www.bbc.com/sport/boxing/65810253

Really feels like they missed the moment. Now with Fury vs Joshua it would no doubt he hyped to death but it wouldn't be anywhere near as interesting as it might have been.

I am not sure keep going to Saudi Arabia ais doing much good either.

Truly impaired.

You are 100% correct. How can a boxing bout in front of 80,000 people at Wembley with a raucos crowd be worse than a bout in front of a selective audience who dont give a f***. Oh yeah...money.

Dont think its struggling, Boxing is absolutely flying at the moment.

Just had a spring summer run of Plant-Benavidez, Tank-Garcia, Haney-Loma, Taylor-Cameron, Wood-Lara twice.

Coming up we have Fulton-Inoue (genuinely the best fight that can be made in boxing)
Spence-Crawford
Taylor-Lopez
Regis Prograis about to fight the winner of that fight or probably Jack Catterall.
Bivol will be back.

The HW division is slow, mainly held up by Fury but elsewhere boxing is the best its been in ages.

Your right it's the Heavy weight division that's awful. Fury goes on its not about the money but won't fight Usyk just wants to fight bums really only had two credible opponents in his career . Much prefer watching fights like Lopez last week in Belfast. The golden days of Ali, Frazier, Norton,Lyle and Forman are long gone who used to fight two or three times a Yr minimum.

To be fair to Fury he fought one of his two World Class opponents three times!

His addiction/mental health break, plus those re-match clauses, then Covid, have stopped any momentum he had.

Heavyweight division is slow at the moment - mainly due to Fury seemingly difficult to get any deal over the line to fight Usyk (or anyone for that matter)

Joshua still a huge draw and forget all the nonsense - he is still a top 3 heavyweight on the planet, and still the no.1 commercial draw in the heavyweight division.

I agree he fought Wilde
r three times but still only 2 opponents of quality and one was about 37 at end of his era.
Fury will always be unconventional with issues I'm afraid.

Aj Fury didn't get done

Fury Usyk didn't get done.

All can I say about White fight is that's supposed to be a tune up for a go at Wilder in Dec which you can understand.

AJ needs a win but needs against someone convincing.

If he loses though it will be a huge set back for him

Set back? He's done if he loses to Whyte.

Idk, he'll still sell tickets, I can see him ploughing on taking meh fights to keep the bank balance nice but as genuine contender and top level fighter I'd agree it's win or bust.

I don't think his heart has been in it for a while though so you could be right

Boxing has been marginalised in terms of its appeal since the move to PPV, which means that casual sports fans rarely see any fights so few of the boxers are household names, but the sport still seems to be doing well fincially, even if much of the money ends up in the hands of the promoters, rather than the fighters (no change there). The heavyweight division is particularly frustrating. Despite a period with several credible contenders (most of whom can still call themselves World Champions thanks to the multiplication of belts) in Fury, Joshua, Wilder & Usyk, the best still fight very rarely. Politics & money play a huge part, but these big fights seem to generate so much money thanks to PPV that the big fighters don't need to appear too often.

100% on both points.

Lopez is brilliant, his technique and fundamentals are far from perfect but he's brilliant to watch, explosive. Was a great watch.

I always enjoyed boxing and even learnt a bit of it at School. It was always the ultimate sport to do and to watch. Particularly to many an old crusty like me, Muhammad Ali was my sporting hero. He really was the greatest sportsman that ever lived in my eyes. Memories - Harry Carpenter, Ali, Frazier, Enry, Foreman, Finnegan, Benn, Eubank, Hagler, Hearns etc etc

But then I watched Eubank v Watson - and watched Michael Watson getting smashed to bits. Nothing against Chris Eubank (I’ve met him - nice bloke) and I know boxers know the risks. It’s just for me, after seeing that, I lost my appetite for watching it.

It’s not something I’d ban. If people wish to do it and watch it, good for them. It’s just something I don’t take an interest in any longer. Each to their own.

That's interesting. Boxing still has a long way to go for sure.

One thing I have noticed though is that Referees do tend to stop the fight slightly earlier now than they did previously you do see less and less of fighters on their backs unconscious, which a positive step, especially in those fights where fighters are as you say "getting smashed to bits". No need to leave them in there for all that punishment.
