Maybe it's just because it was never publicised before, but I was under the impression that previous regimes' 'testing' amounted to an extended run around the training pitches.

(am I right in thinking that, 'back in't'day', the players used to run from PR up to Playford Road as part of the first day back routine?)

'Bleep' test was about the extent of it judging by what the players said each and every year.
