Second this Ulla, took my boy when he was 4 and he loved it. Depending on how old your kids are, you can fill a morning just popping into places. On Moseley St just off Picadilly gardens you've got Manchester Art gallery which has a real range of stuff, there's Black Sheep coffee shop a street or two away for waffles and the like, then you can have a quick look at China Town as you got there. If they're old enough and into comics just wandering up through Picadilly gardens there's Travelling Man comic store, Fred Aldous is an arts and crafts shop that sells all sorts of interesting stuff aimed at kids and big kids too. Afflecks palace is there too if you just want to wander through three floors of goth jumble sale and odds and ends in one place. At the other end of town is the Classic Football shirts shop which is fun to nose through if they;re football fans. Might be a nice after thought from the Football Museum. You can also pop your heads into the Cathedral and John Rylands library to see some architecture, history and culture and just off Deansgate is the statue of Abe Lincoln seemingly plonked there for no good reason until you read the plinth. Spinningfields has lots of chain bars etc and a bit of green space. Just past MOSI is the Castlefield Roman ruins and you can pop further down the road under the viaduct to HOME which is a cinema/theatre and has a decent cafe to people watch/get a pizza etc. Manchester museum by the university is excellent for kids and has just reopened. An easy bus ride from the city centre and a good way to spend half a day or more. They also do different activities sometimes so worth checking ahead. Alternatively just into Salford is the People's History Museum if you want to see something a bit different. There are some really lovely parks and places to visit in the suburbs if you're around for more than a day and fancy a tram ride out of the city a bit. If you fancy the Imperial War Museum out at Salford Quays, it's brilliant but I find the rest of the complex a bit soulless personally. It does have a free Julia Donaldson exhibition on this summer though.

Second this. My boys are seven and five and they spent hours in the kids experiments room. If your kids are youngish then there’s an ‘Operation Ouch’ exhibition which is good fun.

Was really impressed when we spent a day there with my daughter on the university open day. Stuck around for a while longer than we'd planned. Daughter has put Exeter as first choice on her UCAS form however much to my chagrin.
