Does Williams signing allow Clarke to have surgery? 18:38 - Aug 24 with 2784 viewsElderGrizzly

He’s clearly not replacing Davis and assume he has promises made on playing time/position?

Clarke is still clearly struggling given the number of times he was outpaced last week

I think you're correct.

Clarke definitely pulled up when he was trying to sprint next to the QPR striker on Saturday.

That’s my guess.

In his interview Williams stresses on a number of occasions he’s here to play. Obviously nobody can be guaranteed a starting spot but he doesn’t come across as being here to warm the bench!

That surely isn't how it works these days? If he needed surgery we'd send him for it and get it done.

We’ve been trying to manage the injury according to the club, but it looks as though surgery is probably the answer. They’ve admitted as much if it didn’t improve.

Williams signing gives us the cover/quality to do so i’ve assumed

That’s the crucial point for me. He’s clearly been given an indication he is going to be playing and it’s not going to be replacing Davis is it?

I thought similar when reading recent comments. It might have to wait until Donacien is back or it blows up, whichever comes first.

Donacien also went off Saturday so I think this signing is a targeted full back (that McKenna knows) while Clarke and JD recover.

Ball could be cover for Williams. I know Ball has played right back before, and in pre-season, but I don't think he has the pace about him as a right back in the modern game at Championship level.

To be fair, I think we could have done with Usain Bolt at full-back on Saturday to keep up with Sinclair Armstrong...

Considering how little football Williams played last season, and the kind of intensity and tactical understanding K McK expects from his players, can see him being eased in until the international break and then brought up to speed then...or he might just throw him in like he did with Leif Davis!

Not quite like that tho.. can't remember who but someone had surgery pre season to try and sort an issue he'd been playing with. Think burns played a season with a dodgy achilles to that ended with surgery..

a niche perspective

Davis was coming a very fit Leeds team under Bielsa, and he was the starting LB throughout pre-season so slightly different in he didn’t have to get up to match fitness.

I don't think it's the case that they've been "managing the injury" in the sense that they've mainly been alleviating the symptoms so he can play.

As I understand it Clarke's issue with his achilles is something that is usually best treated by physiotherapy and non-surgical interventions (with surgery as an option but not always a successful one). If he's not gone to surgery, I'd assume it's because the other interventions are still playing out, not because we're having him hang on a bit longer so he's available for selection.

Only thing with that is that he was obviously being courted by the club before JD got injured.

I think this is the first sign of the ruthlessness I’ve been expecting of us all summer to be honest. McKenna clearly felt it was an area that needed strengthening and that perhaps Donacien and Leigh weren’t pushing Clarke/Davis enough.

Of course, Davis starts when fit, but maybe McKenna doesn’t want it to be like that in terms of Davis thinking/knowing he’ll play every week. Maybe that’s why Williams has come in to push both him and Clarke … and with the pedigree that Williams has (albeit not much this last season), then who better to push them both on - and hopefully make them better in the meantime.

My complete guess is that we might see us turn in to a bit of a budget Man City/Arsenal where we have a squad of 22-25 players of which anyone of those could start. You’ve only got to look at Arsenals first 2 games this season, Gabriel the Brazilian centre back started every single minute
of every single game last season, but has found himself on the bench for the first 2 games this season.

I think it’s clear to every man and his dog what our first 11 is (albeit Walton being injured), so maybe McKenna just wants some proper strength in depth, rather than simply a back up player incase anyone gets injured.

Poll: We’ve got super KM, he knows exactly what we need. Woolfie at the back…

You're absolutely correct in that the Club were very interested in signing/trying to sign Williams before JD's injury.

I actually think the pursuit of Williams was cover for Clarke's injury (which the Club were "managing" towards the end of last season) that may, and I emphasize may, have now been worsened by that fast sprint trying to keep up with QPR striker Sinclair Armstrong.

Hopefully Clarke's injury hasn't worsened.
