Academy Football 16:12 - Oct 16 with 2642 viewsitfc_bucks

Posted a while ago the my lad was attracting a bit of attention for academy level football (unfortunately, we're not near Ipswich...). We made our choice for him and he's had a productive past few months with them.

He's just been selected for his first game.

And it's against Norwich.

Not going to lie, a HUGE part of me is living this one through my boyo!

I highly recommend Dom Ball's book for a great insight into what he'll be living through, and the pressures that success brings.

We've got a family member who is involved in coaching in one. He's been very clear on the likely outcomes.

I'm no expert by any stretch, but if you ever want my tuppence worth my DM's are open. I've been on both sides of the fence, being in an academy for 4 years during my teens and then some coaching in them during my early 20's.

Personally I think far too much is made of the whole 'prepare for disappointment' thing. Being too conscious of that somewhat misses the point and can work the other way and dilute the benefit. I think it's more about hitting a sensible balance between encouragement to following your dreams, which lets face it is a healthy thing in life, and to also have level of understanding and pragmatism that it's as much about the journey as the destination. If more people viewed it as such I think it would help. I was released at 16, I never felt a failure. I'm sure there's people on here who have run a marathon, you don't need to come 1st to take pride in it. I prefer to twist the '99% won't make it' rhetoric to 1% will, and the vast majority of the 99% of others will still grow from it, will have opportunities from it, and look back with fondness.

I learnt a lot, developed a lot as a player and person, had a lot of fun and it set me up well to play at a good standard in adulthood. Generally the kids with good families around them don't get released and hit a path of self destruction as a result, that's a bit of a myth from my experience.

As a father to a toddler now I suppose I've reflected more on my parents role in it all with me, and they always hit a healthy balance. If I'm ever in that situation as a parent I would hope to be the same (although he's only 3 and far more interested in Fireman Sam and farm animals than football).

Good luck, I hope your son enjoys his journey, wherever it takes him.

Mate based on his current interests if he's not a future Fireman, farmer, professional marshmallow taster or hide and seek champion I'll be shook.

My youngest is very similar. Except he always hides under his bed, so I think we might eliminate that from the list soon.

Let him enjoy the Academy experience, he’s there because he’s a good player. Nevertheless, it’s difficult as a parent as you want to make the small percentages count, but ultimately your lad will find his own level, whatever that maybe. However, it certainly does no harm in having a ‘Plan B’ in the back pocket just in case. It’s something that Academy Player Care Officer’s will be suggesting from an early stage, which ultimately is good advice.

Good luck with the journey.

Good luck to your lad. No reason why he can't be one of the ones to make it. Give him every encouragement and to enjoy the ride. Best of luck to him. First pro deal has to be with Ipswich though, right.

Appreciate the offer.

I'm sure most people think this, but our journey has been quite different to most of the other kids we've met on the route so far. We've got a generally sporty kid, but he has never been over keen on any one sport.

He plays cricket to a high level, cross country for county, rubgy, rock climbing...he does it all. We never pushed him to trials or anything, and never really realised how good he was until trials.

I think your mindset on your time with "the system" is healthy, I'll be encouraging that view when it comes to the usual end of season cullings!

Meantime, we'll continue to enjoy the journey and use it to expose him to new things, new places, new people and just see where the ride goes.

I'm biased, of course, but if he doesn't do *something* in *some* sport, I'll be astounded. For such a young'un, he absolutely adores sports and would rather pore over youtube videos of the 1992 uefa cup final, looking at patterns of play, than sit on fifa (other games available). And if it's not football, it's cricket...

He's a throwback to when I was a wee'un - out on his bike over the summer, with a few mates, coming back either when it's dark or when they're hungry.

I've lucked out with a good'un.

Certainly sounds like a good all rounder, feel this is one of the down sides of Academy football where they want 'exclusivity', however playing other sports doesn't do any harm at all. If anything, it can provide other skills, knowledge and understanding. Nevertheless, ITFC Bucks, I hope your lad does well in whatever pathway he takes, as long as he enjoys what he does that all that matters.
