Little Boats 13:46 - Apr 23 with 1832 views | OldFart71 | I see another dinghy has tragically cost the lives of more illegals reaching our shores, one being a young child. Whilst this is very sad I am at a loss as to why instead of trying to find ways of either paying the French to prevent these boats and getting laws passed to fly these people to Rwanda why has this Government put more into stopping the traffickers. Everything is a bodge from allowing water Company's to pump sewage into rivers to paying motorist compensation for damage to vehicles instead of fixing potholes and whilst we are on about that why do the highways people fill in one pothole and leave another a few feet away ?

Probably for the best. Someone will be along in a minute to tell us to 'be kind' to the poster equating a hole in a road on a par with dead children.

With regards to the former in addition to the lost lives 47 were rescued. Over 50 others were allowed to continue their journey, presumably escorted until they were in U.K. waters and then brought ashore by Border Force.

There is an underlying point here. If the UK Government, rather than populist stuff about Rwanda and "illegals", concentrated on getting the asylum system working right (including funding and staffing levels), there would be proper routes into the country for refugees and we could actually process their applications rather than keeping them uselessly locked up for years in old military camps or on boats.

Don't give the Tories ideas. Before long they'll be proposing to fill in the potholes with migrant children.

That isn't a vote winner amongst the unthinking knuckle draggers.

Inability to process applications for asylum within a reasonable timescale is a disgrace. The populist stuff about Rwanda and "illegals" is a sop to stop the Tories leaking more votes.

Yep. It annoys me quite a lot when Tory politicians have used the phrase disrupting the business model of the traffickers. The real way to disrupt the business model isn’t faffing about incompetently on the last leg of journey. It is providing real options for humans as close to where the human needs it. When a person is fleeing for their life the choice should be hmmm, which is my nearest safe place, that UN place over the border, or the consulate over that border, rather than relying on a local trafficker gang exploiting them and trying to get across multiple countries and sea crossings. Just need a three word slogan that fits underneath a Lectern. Save Humans Quicker?

Then there's the little matter of cutting or diverting overseas aid budgets. That used to be something which could be used to keep places more stable, to alleviate famine and disasters. To stop people having to move in the first place. People saying "charity begins at home" are missing the second half of the original quote - "but should not end there".
