If szmoidics and Clarke come in where do they primarily play? 14:19 - Jul 24 with 2682 viewsnodge_blue

I assume it would have to be Clarke left in the 3-1 system along with Broadhead.

Chaplin centre along with Szomdics.

Burns right with Hutchinson.

Hirst up top along with Delap.

With the ability for some of these guys to go in different slots.

Left: Clarke, Broadhead, Szmodics
Centre: Omari, Chaplin, Szmodics
Right: Burns, Omari, Delap

I'd say those 7 would be combinations of the above. A lot of versatility though as you say. Delap will play a lot I would think, given we paid £15m for him. Equally I think Burns, Omari and Hirst will too. Such is the game now we're very much going to be using 16 players every week and those 'finishers' typically will be in the 4 forward roles with the level of physical output, so stands to reason why we want the depth there.

Looks tough for the likes of Harness to see a future as it is, let alone with 2-3 further additions.

Harness is only one injury away from being in that rotation I think, particularly because Delap looks like he might also be in the rotation for the 9 role.

I can't see us getting both Clarke and Szmodics. We might be just using that to get the best deal we can or first and second choice.

TBH I'm not sure myself, although I mentioned in another thread I was told by someone ITK last night that its unlikely we will do both, and the Clarke was being viewed as an alternative if we couldn't get SS done as Blackburn are a bit rogue to deal with and there were no guarantees.

Be interesting to see how it plays out. TBH I'm more interested in a central midfielder or 2 now. Appreciate these things can run concurrently and its not an either / or but would think there should be some progress on that front pretty soon.

Omari will play right and central.
Clarke would play left only.
Delap will play right and CF.
...In my opinion.

I don't think Szmodics is a left winger, even in the way we use them, I think he'd only play centrally on the whole. I could see scenarios where he plays in the 10 instead of Chaplin (rotation) and Omari is left and Burns right.

I think so too, and I also think that Harness might come in for more time where we need a physically strong, more defensively minded player with good stamina in the left forward role. Someone who allows Leif to do his stuff and can shackle a powerful opposition right back on the counter attack.

If they both come in, then they will primarily play at Portman Road. Other times at various other away grounds as well.

I'd be amazed if he starts a single PL game this season, or even features in more than 5 tbh. Handy enough option to have around the place for his final year though.

I think he could end up being more involved off the bench than you would think once you end up getting an injury or two or a suspension. Jackson ended up making 29 appearances last season. Given we use 8 players in those 4 positions every game, you need 9/10 options really.

We are currently two attacking players down on the end of the season with Jackson, Sarmiento and Moore out and only Delap in.

He'll be an excellent 24/25th squad member that we already have in the building and knows our system.

I wouldn't have been surprised if Jacko was offered another year for similar reasons. Cheaper than getting someone else in, and we won't need to be teaching someone new our system.

Like you say i'll be suprised if he makes double figures in appearances, but has value to the overall squad.

Similarly I hope Edmundson sticks around. He's done nothing wrong and definitely has the technique and decent enough pace to cope should he be thrown in. I guess it will all come down to how much we want to cash in on players we could get some money for approaching the end of their contracts or we see better value in them being squad members.

Time will tell, but I think his minutes will be really limited. Jackson was a different profile to Harness, operating on the right at times when Burns had injuries, and also through the middle when we really lacked depth when Hirst was out.

Harness' opportunities historically are probably a better indication of Harness' future opportunities I would've thought, and he barely featured in the run in. Totalled half an hour of football in the final 10 games, across 2 sub appearances. I just don't see a world where we're promoted to the premier league and he gets closer to the side than he was last season. I think he'll be a valuable squad member who brings continuity, we clearly know what we're going to get from him and he'll fill in as a bench option at times. Just not one we'll see much of IMO.

You could well be right! Although probably highlights why we perhaps will look for two more options, because at the moment he is closer to the team than he was at the back end of last season.

Two attacking players down on the end of the season in terms of players who were being utilised...

If you take into consideration players who count towards squad numbers, we are +1 with Al-Hamadi (didn't count last season - Under 21 then, Over 21 now), and -5 with Moore & Sarmiento returning from loan, Jackson and Aluko leaving the club, and although Hutchinson has returned, he doesn't count towards numbers as still U21 (did last season as a Premier League loanee) Even Delap doesn't impact squad numbers as he qualifies as U21 too...

So should give us headroom to bring more new players into the front 4, as well as holding on to our existing ones.

If we bring those in, Harness is surely going to be sold or loaned out

Ladapo and/or AAH also likely to be loaned or moved on
