When the intensity drops 14:46 - Aug 17 with 2109 views | cbower | We are in trouble in this league. I think we might have to adjust a little and plsy 3 in midfield. In the first half, Morsy and Luongo held their own. From 50ish onwards, they were overrun. Luongo especially just gave it away several times. With less pressure on the ball, Liverpool picked passes in behind Woolfenden in particular and we began to look vulnerable. This for me is where Phillips and probably Cajuste will come into the picture, maybe in a three. Johnson looked lost when he came on for Burns I'm afraid. Greaves was good, Walton and Delap too. Morsy was fine but needs help, Davis will find his feet. Chaplin never gave up as you would expect and some good signs from Hutch. I think it will take KMc a few games to integrate signings and some regulars will find themselves on the bench. Plenty to be positive about.

When the intensity drops on 14:55 - Aug 17 with 1957 views | WicklowBlue | It was noticeable when Burns went off how Liverpool seemed to move into a different gear. Burns was keeping Robertson pressed back Johnson couldn't do the same. Great effort by the whole team and a learning experience, lots of growth potential.
When the intensity drops on 14:59 - Aug 17 with 1873 views | Nutkins_Return | Love Woolf but I really fear his pace is going to be a big problem in this league. Obviously Liverpool are an outstanding team so can't make rash judgements but was a concern going into the season. Proper Ipswich boy and a really cultured CB but it's a concern. I know this will be unpopular and I really hope he can find a way to make it work with his position etc. on the ball he's so composed.

In hindsight I think Szmodics or Harness should have come on for Burns with Hutch switching to the right. We did wilt with Johnson there. I personally thought Woolfenden had a great game overall but seem to be in the minority there.

When the intensity drops on 15:01 - Aug 17 with 1842 views | tcblue | We're not in trouble in this league. We've got a good percentage of the squad still to bed in / join / come back from injury and we held our own for the most part against the second best side in the country. Against bottom half sides we'll be fine. And that's what will matter.
When the intensity drops on 15:03 - Aug 17 with 1807 views | Ryorry | Walton's still got it! So pleased for him. Think Cajuste, if we do get him over the line, will make a huge difference in midfield from what I've read of him, good at both plugging oppositions' forward routes & turning defence into attack. Noticeable that we hit a huge wall of tiredness very suddenly in the 2nd half. Interesting point made by the TNT commentator that for newly promoted sides it isn't just the physical tiredness that can be an issue, but all the adrenaline & excitement of the morning & build-up that can take energy out of them, so they need to learn to deal with that & pace themselves.

When the intensity drops on 15:06 - Aug 17 with 1738 views | urbanblue | There were some positives but seems clear to me that for some of our favourites from the last couple of seasons the Premier League is a step too far. I'd bet that the team that finishes this season will be quite different from the one that has started. Thought Greaves was outstanding. Delap was very good. Omari showed signs that he will adjust to the higher level. Harness, yet again, put in a pretty good cameo. I hate to say it but Chappers looked lost. Still feeling positive for the season though.

Thought Wolf was just as good as Greaves. Both made 8 clearances. Wolf with 2 blocks and 3 interceptions, Greaves with 1 and 2.

Just to be clear on my comment above I didn't think Woolf played badly and he performed pretty well but there were 4-5 occasions Liverpool (with their exceptional quality) split the defence and the pace difference was noticeable. I thought the defence stood up as best they could and the team were stretched which isn't all on the defence.

Woolfenden was fine in himself. Any CB would look vulnerable against the quality balls in behind from Liverpool which were enabled by the drop in midfield intensity. It's a team game and the midfield were well in the game for 50 minutes but overrun after that. Replacing Luongo with Taylor was ok but it also needed Chaplin to be replaced by Phillips to go into a three at that time for me.

I think the issue is - and it was at times last year too - it's too easy to play round our central midfield. One, two touches and suddenly the opposition are at our exposed back line. Cajuste and Phillips are key signings and will hopefully help with this in the long term.

When the intensity drops on 15:44 - Aug 17 with 1352 views | noggin | Watched the game with a neutral mate who has played and coached at a pretty high level. He was impressed with Walton and Greaves but said early on that we wouldn't be able to keep up the press that we had in the first half. I am proud of the players but some of the established players are clearly not PL ready.

The question is can McKenna get them up to PL standard, or have they reached their ceiling? It's a decision which has to be made before the end of August.
