Burley’s barmy army non stop on Saturday 11:02 - Sep 10 with 2732 viewsAsa

Absolutely love the man.

The number of great memories I have of supporting Town that he’s largely responsible for are unquantifiable.

Awful news.

Best wishes to him.

Even the Pink un is saying nice things about George.
Respect to them and says a lot about how he is regarded.

Horrible news. Wish him all the best with his recovery.

There is nobody that has done or achieved more for ITFC than George. Involved in 3 of arguably our 4 greatest ever achievements - FA Cup, UEFA Cup, 5th placed finish in the PL. Proper legend.

George Burley is my Ipswich manager

I love KM to bits, but growing up singing that chant week in week out, special memories, all GB related.

I’d like to see the pioneer stand named after him, personally

There are always good eggs regardless of the club they are associated with.

Ken Brown was someone I always thought was thoroughly decent.

Plus one lone shout of "Borley ruined this club" from somewhere in the Southampton area.

I'm currently on holiday but had to post a message of good will to the great man. The word legend is used far too frequently for my liking, but in George's case it rings true. A fantastic servant as a player during one of our most successful periods and of course a truly great manager of our beloved club. I wish you all the very, very best of wishes George and I will keep you in my thoughts.

I can only echo MK1s post and others.

Get well soon George.

For those too young to have seen GB as a player, the best I can say about him is he’d get into any modern day team.

He came into the side in 1974. He was I think 17 and looked a lot younger but don’t be fooled. He was as tough as old boots from the off, went up and down that wing like no tomorrow and could cross the ball onto a postage stamp.

George was good in the tackle and was a great team player/cover/integrated with Hunter, Beattie, Butcher, Osman, Mills. Not the biggest or the greatest of goalscorers but those who were there will never forget that piledriver at the Den in 1978. Nearly scored in the final too, but for the great Pat Jennings and those shovels for hands.

As a rather quiet unassuming character he rarely gets mentioned amongst those and the other legends, but he deserves to be. 500 appearances I bet he was one of the first names on Robson’s team sheet.

I saw him play when he broke into the team. He was there to stay right from the off. Neat, tidy, skilful - just like the team he managed.

The rhythmic, ‘ Georgie Burleys’ Blue N White Army’ going on for about 20 minutes, whole ground joining in, was a great memory of those play off years, especially under the lights. One of Bobbys’ Boys he had the link, and the style, for us to love.
As a player, if not for that injury in 81’, we’d have had a much better chance of that treble, no doubt . Wasn’t he also the first player to return to playing after a ACL injury? Seemed to lose out on Scotland caps to Danny McGrain, I’ve no idea why, surely no better?

George was before my time, regrettably, as a fan, but when I joined the club as a member of staff, he was in his last year of management at ITFC. He was a quiet, unassuming gentleman who happily engaged with us office staff, and I always had a lot of respect for him. He earned that respect by his demeanour and his performance as a manager.

I wish George all the very best with his treatment. Cancer is a horrible adversary. I hope you beat the hell out of it George. ❤️

George won 11 Caps. I thought it was more than that. I thought he was a better 0layer than McGrain, but then I’m biased!

I agree re the treble too.
