We've gone long from 51% of our goal kicks this season - 5th in the league behind Arsenal, Everton, West Ham and Forest so I think it's a become a bit of a false view that we always play out from the back. |  |

The whole point about playing out from the back is that it creates an extra man because the opposition gk can’t mark / press. Playing straight to our attackers allows the opposition to stack that area and swamp our players | |

Because unless you're very accurate, going long means a much greater chance of losing the ball... and then it just comes straight back at you. |  |

And as you pointed out a couple of weeks ago, Muric's long range passing accuracy is circa 40% - which is about average for the league. The reason teams don't like going long all the time is because it's easy to keep cheaply giving the ball away and inviting pressure. | | | |

This is the main point for me. If you keep possession of the ball then you control the game more. At the moment we aren’t doing it very well and that starts all sorts of problems on the pitch and mentally. |  |

There are issues with going long, too.
Because the ball is in the air for several seconds, defenders have time to position themselves, shove the hoped-for receiver out of the way, or at least interfere with their stability and cramp their space.
With the ball coming down from high, first contact is almost inevitably a header. Often with less than full control. This can result in head-tennis, with a good chance of not retaining the ball at the end of it.
In both cases the receiver is facing their own goal, but with the short ball to feet there is more control and thus a better chance of being able to turn (Morsy style) or pick a pass to a forward-facing colleague.
The long ball for one of our attackers to run on to in space is an ideal, but in the Prem defenders are wise to that and fast enough to get there first. |  |

That's the theory but if you don't use the extra man it is of no benefit. Plus you only need to make one mistake and the opposition is clean through. I agree with the OP that we should err on the side of caution regarding playing out from the back. I am not suggesting we just boot the ball up the field but to play constructive longer balls to the wings or defence challenging cross field balls. When opposition teams sit back and defend deep, that's the time to play out from the back. |  | | |

If you have a goalie that can confidently and accurately distribute the ball, and a defender or two who can look up and do the same it’s fine. You keep the ball and build with control. If you don’t it’s too often in the hands of the gods.
