In the meantime, the US has given Israel further protection from attack. Hopefully, Iran will not be so stupid as to respond, and things will not escalate.

Can Iran afford not to respond? The problem with tit-for-tat is there is no logical end to the process without someone climbing down and losing face. Which risks the standing, if not survival, of the government who decides to turn the other cheek. Plus there are people involved who want to keep poking the situation.

Indeed. After Iran launched over 400 missiles into Israel, their response could have gone for Iran's oil fields or nuclear facilities. So a reasonably restrained FAFO response which signals to Iran that the ball is in their court. [Post edited 26 Oct 2024 9:56]

Iran attacked Israel first. Twice this year. What response would you expect from our government if the French launched 400 missiles on sleepy suffolk in two separate attacks?

Probably the launch of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (there’s not much else left) and a stiff telling off before Sir Kier heads to his next free Taylor Swift concert. Despite my facetiousness, the point is that Iran attacked Israel with 400 missiles. They have responded. What did people expect them to do? Hopefully that’ll be that, though I doubt it. It feels like a war without end.

To be fair to Israel, all of Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq and Syria play host (not necessarily willingly) to pro-Iranian or Iranian-backed militias and organisations. Frequently with direct co-ordination and supply by the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. It's what happens when you have two bitter enemies with no common border to fight across.

I wonder what has fuellled the hatred that fuels those organisations? And I wonder how long it will be before Israel start complaining about the next generation of martyrs with nothing to lose, that they have created by killing their parents.

Nothing, just people in the press picking on her in an unbalanced way as usual. She has a lot of knockers, which explains the lack of balance and coverage.

Hezbollah and the Houthi’s have killed many more Muslims than Jewish people so that’s a rather simplistic take as to what’s going on in the region. Iran’s proxies have killed thousands of mainly Sunni’s in their battle for regional dominance with Saudi. I’m not sure the existence of a Jewish state can be blamed for that.

Of course its more complicated, but the fundamental point remains...

Why did a jihadist terror group (Houthis) also take over Yemen? Why did a jihadist terror group (IRGC) also take over Iran? Why did a jihadist terror group (Taliban) take over Afghanistan? Why did a jihadist terror group (ISIS) take over large parts of Iraq and Syria? Why did a jihadist terror group (Boko Haram) take over parts of Nigeria? Why did a jihadist terror group (Janjaweed) take over large parts of Sudan and Chad? Why did a jihadist terror group (Al Shabaab) take over parts of Somalia? Hamas and Hezbollah are part of a larger problem of jihadism that exists all across the Middle East. You can't keep blaming Israel for everything.

Unlikely - last time Jordan was busy shooting down Iranian missiles that crossed through its airspace. Many of the Gulf states are also allied to the US and Saudi, and would be more than happy to see Iran weakened. Domestically I don’t think there will be huge pressure for Iran to respond (other than the hardliners). The country is in economic crisis largely from Sanctions - the last time Iran responded with missiles its currency hit a record low. This means price increases for the people living in Iran, who would more likely see economic stability than any engagement with Israel. Any conventional response (missiles etc) would be expensive, and likely ineffective. Their proxies in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen have been shattered. It might be Iran goes for more hybrid responses such as cyber attacks, or further attacks on shipping (perhaps oil tankers as they’ve done in the past). Time will tell…

Israel crippled Iran’s defensive and offensive abilities last night. There oloy real direct threat will now be through drones, which are more difficult to intercept. The Iranian state found out last night that it's substantially harder to take down an Israeli jet covering their airspace than it is to beat the crap out of a defenceless woman for not covering her hair.

Hatred is only one element. There's also sectarian, political and tribal alignments, money, status, opportunities in regions with young populations and high youth unemployment. Only a portion of these anti-Israeli organisations are Palestinian. The Iraqi* and Yemeni** ones derive entirely from local situations. Attacking Israel gets them funds and arms to pursue their own agendas. * Formed in response to Saddam's sunni oppression of his shi'a population. ** Emerging from a civil war and factional seizure of power.
