Explosions in Tehran on 13:02 - Oct 26 by Guthrum | Hatred is only one element. There's also sectarian, political and tribal alignments, money, status, opportunities in regions with young populations and high youth unemployment. Only a portion of these anti-Israeli organisations are Palestinian. The Iraqi* and Yemeni** ones derive entirely from local situations. Attacking Israel gets them funds and arms to pursue their own agendas. * Formed in response to Saddam's sunni oppression of his shi'a population. ** Emerging from a civil war and factional seizure of power. |
Don't disagree with any of that.

Explosions in Tehran on 11:54 - Oct 26 by GlasgowBlue | Israel crippled Iran’s defensive and offensive abilities last night. There oloy real direct threat will now be through drones, which are more difficult to intercept. The Iranian state found out last night that it's substantially harder to take down an Israeli jet covering their airspace than it is to beat the crap out of a defenceless woman for not covering her hair. |
And to think there are people here in the west that support these barbarian regimes

Don’t Mention the Children by Michael Rosen Don’t mention the children. Don’t name the dead children. The people must not know the names of the dead children. The names of the children must be hidden. The children must be nameless. The children must leave this world having no names. No one must know the names of the dead children. No one must say the names of the dead children. No one must even think that the children have names. People must understand that it would be dangerous to know the names of the children. The people must be protected from knowing the names of the children. The names of the children could spread like wildfire. The people would not be safe if they knew the names of the children. Don’t name the dead children. Don’t remember the dead children. Don’t think of the dead children. Don’t say: ‘dead children’. This written in response to Israel banning the naming of dead children in Gaza a while ago. I used to only know Michael Rosen from We Are Going on a Bear Hunt but he has written some very good stuff. BTW This is not a pro this or a pro that with either side, just a reflection on the namelsss children when they are bombed killed in such terrible circumstances.

As a matter of interest, are you in favour of the state of Israel being wiped from the face of the earth? I have no axe to grind or connection with Israel, Palestine or the rest of the Arab states and don’t know anywhere near enough about this. I’m just interested in your view as the complete eradication and throwing out of its surviving people is the only way I can ever see this ending. I just can’t see the Arab states ever accepting its presence. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

you're probably right, but targeted sanctions against the most extreme individuals in the government would be a logical next step

Well right now, all I see is Palestinian lives being of less value than Israeli lives. They take Palestinian land and livelihoods at will and the IDF bomb civilian areas indiscriminately. They must be stopped but there is no will to stop them. Edit. I'm not getting into this again. The thread will end up going the way of others so I'm out. [Post edited 26 Oct 2024 14:46]

Similar to yourself, i have no skin in the game, aside from my own thoughts about death, war and innocent people being killed. Sadly i share the same view as yourself that it seems the only way to resolve this is that either Israel is eradicated or that areas like Gaza and West Bank become part of Israel. The two state solution seemed like the best solution, however i am not sure it will ever settle down in the region. Part of me has wondered whether this is Israels approach, if they wipe Gaza out, displace all the inhabitants then thats one of the areas sorted and one less border to worry about. They complete destruction of the area seems to indicate this. Its incredibly sad whatever side you are on. Often these conflicts are driven by a minority with their own purposes, most people just want to live their lives in peace, raise their children safely and enjoy the short life that we all have.

I don’t want to get into who did what or is worth on this. Mutters neatly, and in my opinion correctly for what little that’s worth, explored my question further. But my question remains. Do you see the only solution as the destruction of the state of Israel and the expulsion of its surviving people given co-existence seems a million miles away at the moment?

I don't have the answers I'm afraid but stopping the settlements and returning the land would be a start. How they rebuild Gaza, I don't know. [Post edited 26 Oct 2024 14:50]

i can see neighbouring states accepting israel (as several of them do), but there has to be a less belligerent israel and a less belligerent iran for any chance of this

For a long time the only solution in Northern Ireland was the eradication of the IRA or a united Ireland. Eventually peace was brought about through dialogue and some degree of compromise. This situation looks much more entrenched than that one was but there is always the possibility of dialogue, compromise and peace but only where there is the political will from those with the power. Unfortunately, that doesn't appear to be the case on either side at the moment. If France had bombed Suffolk without killing anyone my reaction would not be "let's obliterate them back", but "Why have they done that? What do we need to do to prevent it happening again with much more devastating consequences?" Of course there would be those going, "That was close. Better nuke them so they can't do it again." Of course, the situation is in no way comparable.

Explosions in Tehran on 09:52 - Oct 26 by Guthrum | Can Iran afford not to respond? The problem with tit-for-tat is there is no logical end to the process without someone climbing down and losing face. Which risks the standing, if not survival, of the government who decides to turn the other cheek. Plus there are people involved who want to keep poking the situation. |
If we are to believe what is said with regards to Netanyahu that if he backs down he'll be kicked out and possibly locked up he won't be surrendering anything. I personally think the very sad thing about all of this is given what happened to the Jews in WW2 they are showing little compassion to the women and children in Gaza. But in any war isn't it always those that are least involved who are the one's who suffer the most.
Explosions in Tehran on 13:10 - Oct 27 with 666 views | DJR | Interesting to hear Jeremy Bowen on the World Service saying that Netanyahu's response in relation to Iran has been criticised as too soft by centrists like Lapid. This suggests that there is demand for stronger action in Israel, and Netanyahu is acting in a reasonable way, bizarre as that may sound. However, it could be that Biden is keeping him in check, and who knows how it might pan out if Trump is elected, given his views on things like the Iran nuclear deal. [Post edited 27 Oct 2024 13:18]
