Looks entirely accidental. Toed the ball and then tried to jump the keeper.

Yeah, pretty dubious reffing. Where have I heard that before. 🙄

Some of the still photos show a full on stud puncture on his face. 10 staples in his face while still on the pitch. He's lucky not to have lost an eye, IMO.

It's an interesting one. Players outfield, going in for a challenge need to have the ability to pull out of a challenge if they deem it dangerous to continue, or they risk a card.

With the keeper that close and rushing in, the striker needs to be aware of whether they are going to risk serious injury by taking a shot, surely?

Plus it’s in slow motion as well - had no time to pull out.

Nasty one that. But as a keeper you through yourself into situations where you know you might get injured. I doubt it was deliberate; it's not unreasonable for the forward to think the keeper might pull his head down at the last minute.

No. This is why they call out goalkeepers for diving in and being brave.... at the end of the day, if you put your head where a foot is likely to be, then its on you. ( on the flip side, I do think that anyone who overhead kicks and gets someone in the head should be sent off for dangerous play).
