Change tactics v Man City 07:15 - Jan 18 with 1716 views | Blue_Heath | We will get slaughtered faffing around at the back as we saw against Brighton. Keep the three front players up and bang it long. I know this won't be popular but needs must, keep the ball away from our goal and hit them on the break where they have conceded many goals. At some point City will turn up and hit 5 or 6 which would be very damaging if against us. Keep Omari up the pitch when they have corners too. Sorry, but we are at the stage where needs must and given the number of home points dropped we somehow need to claw these back against the likes of City etc.

Change tactics v Man City on 07:46 - Jan 18 with 1601 views | Dubtractor | Did you actually watch the Brighton game? We weren't slaughtered We didn't faff around at the back much at all We 'banged it long' a lot, and just gave the ball straight back to Brighton every time. Also, if we leave 3 players up against city then they will hammer us, as it will give them far too much space to play in. [Post edited 18 Jan 7:57]

Every time we played out from back bar a few occasions it didn't work so yes I was there and did see it and City are much better than Brighton who created many chances from our inability to play out. City are suspect at the back hence the need to exploit it Delap up against Gvardiol on the break is the tactic all day long for me with supporting runners. [Post edited 18 Jan 8:39]

Change tactics v Man City on 09:21 - Jan 18 with 1386 views | smithy69 | So you want us to leave 3 up top and bang the ball long. We may with those tactics score a goals for sure - maybe even 2 But leaving 7 on 7 - with tonnes of space - we probably concede 10

You think Man City wouldn't keep players back if we leave 3 up? Their defence doesn't like people running at them.
Change tactics v Man City on 10:36 - Jan 18 with 1254 views | Meadowlark | It was noticeable against Brighton how often Walton "banged it long," Especially in the first half. It was also noticeable that he didn't do it quite so much in the second half, so it was obviously a deliberate change. I'm not sure why though, and whether we learned anything........

I think playing out of the back is being criticised because it led to their first goal. Getting jammed in before we gave it away from a throw in. But the throw in was in a non threatening position and more issues came after it than before it.

Change tactics v Man City on 12:05 - Jan 18 with 1067 views | bournemouthblue | We have done alright playing out against other sides but Brighton in fairness to them, pretty much snuffed it out You suspect City will have similar success there If we wanted to go more direct, you could start with Hirst and put Delap on the left or right wing

Change tactics v Man City on 12:19 - Jan 18 with 1015 views | FrimleyBlue | I get what you're saying but no. For 60 minutes we mixed it up v brighton. But replies in this thread make it out that we didn't do what you suggest at all which is incorrect That final 30 minutes we didn't get it forward and we were playing it around the back and it didn't work. Forced to by Brighton or the players took it upon themselves to I don't know but we definitely spent that last 30 minutes playing the ball around the back

I think the biggest concern after they scored was we seemed to have no direction or belief. It didn't come across as us having a clue what we were doing. I would argue McKenna made a mistake switching to 4-2-3-1. Admittedly we weren't making much headway after the goal, but we looked even more lost at that point.

Change tactics v Man City on 12:25 - Jan 18 with 969 views | Pioneer_Blue | I think Man City game will suit this system better as they park their defensive line on halfway and leave space in behind. That narrows the gap from back to front so easier to get up in support and means if Delap gets a ball in the channel and turns his man he's got an angle to drive at the box. Much like with Chelsea Brighton seemed to play more of a mid block so bigger gaps left Delap isolated and also meant when he pulled wider he was driving towards the side of the box / into no man's land. Brighton game was prob least suited to this system in block of 6 games (excluding Bristol R) from Arsenal to Liverpool but made sense to stick with it from a consistency POV if nothing else. Wouldn't be over-surprised if we see an additional 10 for at least some of the following run given fixtures and players coming back. [Post edited 18 Jan 12:38]

The problem is our midfield can't seem to get control and obviously v City this will be incredibly difficult. We need Delap on top of his game bullying Gvardiol.
