The US Education Department is no more.... 20:42 - Mar 20 with 1604 views | ElderGrizzly | Trump just signing another exec order to completely shut down the DoE and send all policy back to the states. Highly unlikely it will carry as signed, as it needs a 60/40 Senate vote, which he doesn't have. Still, very worrying times for those in red states in particular if he finds a way of circumventing the courts and the Senate.

Equivalent to an English PM just making laws on a whim and ignoring parliament. Hopefully would nto happen here, because of our constitution (despite it being uncodified- unlike the US....)

My understanding is that he’s sacked half the staff already and undermined it to the point where it’s no longer viable anyway. Given he doesn’t have Congress approval, is this a way of circumventing it it? US constitution experts thoughts required! I’m guessing that if this play works, he’ll apply it to other things. Centralising power in his safe, capable hands? All power to the dear leader and Senate/Congress there to cheer and stamp their approval? The signing with those children and all those dopey flags was very odd too.

Problem is, he has been able to load the supreme court. There is a genuine issue as to whether any constitutional challenge gets through that elephant trap.

Show pony Has anyone got a version that shows the kids around him as I am very disturbed by what I have seen so far. But before I comment more I would like to see a wide shot of the kids. [Post edited 21 Mar 13:53]

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't he say during campaigning that his supporters will never have to vote again. Is he becoming a dictator or are these reports simply sensationalist?

Dictator. Other leaders don't dare say it as they either can't quite believe it or are running scared of him.

The comment about his supporters only having to vote one more time can be interpreted in two ways: 1 Trump meant that onc he has power, he won't relinquish it. 2 Trump is the Trump candidate, not the Republican Party candidate, and once he has completed two terms he doesn't care whether his supporters keep voting Republican or not. Either would be consistent with his egocentric personality.

I agree. Dictator. Reading this morning it looks like checks, balances, oversight groups are all being stripped away. Add in lawsuits by the Musks of this world that look likely to bankrupt organisations like for example Greenpeace, removal of opposition media and targeting opposition politicians and lawyers and you can see what’s happening. I note that Trumps merry men are not even sparing veterans’ organisations from the axe. https://time.com/7268672/trump-upending-american-approach-veterans/

I think there is little mileage in other world leaders openly declaring it. They need to deal with him in the most effective way they can. Technically, he is the democratically-elected leader. How far he has begun to step into the actions of a dictator is a moot point. All democratically-elected leaders have some amount of authoritarian control. The issue is where the checks and balances kick in and whether someone will stop Trump when it becomes necessary. It is clear he is causing harm to the US. How long before someone with the power to do so says enough is enough. Or is there no such person?
