KoA Ashton Interview: Being a football CEO, not much fun... 14:32 - Jun 12 with 2831 views | nrb1985 | Just listened to the KoA interview with MA and it really struck me – being a football CEO must be one of the most thankless jobs out there compared to other white-collar roles. MA’s been hugely successful for four years now, but he sounded tired – exhausted, even. He’s got a long summer ahead of being messed about by agents and player entourages, working long hours, probably missing family milestones. And maybe the most draining thing of all: EVERYONE, qualified or not, has an opinion on how you could do it better. In most “high-profile” office jobs, once you’ve proven yourself you can ease off a bit – roll in at 9:30, leave at 5, take the odd long lunch, and head off for a couple of weeks with the family to recharge. The only way I think I could do what he does is if it was a fixed-term contract with a chunk of equity in the business. Maybe MA has that, but I couldn’t do his schedule indefinitely. Him, KM, and the rest of the team who put in those relentless hours have my total admiration. Him, KM and the other staff who all supposedly put in these relentlessly long hours have my total admiration. [Post edited 13 Aug 15:10]

KoA Ashton Interview: Being a football CEO, not much fun... on 14:45 - Jun 12 with 2666 views | blueoutlook | Not much fun ? He earns a fortune, doesn’t have to do it. He loves it. He has more roles than he needs. Shouldn’t have been CEO. He needed to be under someone like he was with OLeary. Who he could bounce things off with. But his ego meant when offered he took that role as well. Now he has only himself to answer to this side of the pond.
KoA Ashton Interview: Being a football CEO, not much fun... on 14:47 - Jun 12 with 2635 views | OldFart71 | And of course he is taking advice from others as to who the Town recruits. I remember hearing that back in the Burley management days players like Mateo Sereni and Finidi George were recommended to George. In the case of Sereni it was alleged that it was Sven G E who recommended him. This may be total rubbish ? But it does show how many outside influences are coming at you touting players. Also at the same time development of various parts of the ground and training facilities and the possible sale of players. All need to be got right because there are thousands of part time managers in the form of fans telling you that so and so should have been got and so and so should be sold. Also local and National press coming up with names and suggestions as to how you should play and who you need.

You can get paid a fortune in other roles and not have to work from 6am to midnight, while also trying to appease 30k people every other weekend too. That was rather the point of my post... [Post edited 12 Jun 14:51]

As l say,he could walk away, but his ego wouldn’t let him. He didn’t need to be chairman and CEO, but he chose to do it all himself. I’m sure other options were discussed at the time, Gamechanger are too professional not to have looked at other ideas. He must have told them he could do it all.

I think you'll find most CEO's work long hours and have similar drive / commitment. Its a lifestyle choice.

There is nothing stopping him taking council from others - and I'm sure he does. In a typical organisation, a Chairman is rarely involved or seen day-to-day. Their role is only to 'coordinate' the board of directors, and the BoD's role is one of oversight and corporate governance. Nothing to do with the day-to-day operations. If the members of the BoD is strong and doing their job correctly, the Chairman's job is limited. In fact many individuals are Chairman of the BoD in many companies. Do I think they should be separated? Yes - it can offer better optics. Does it fundamentally matter? No - and in fact it's normal for the CEO to be on the BoDs anyway, so are part of the BoD oversight anyway,

You can't really just walk away if you're an equity holder.

well aware of that thanks. Football I think is somewhat unique, for many of the reasons I've already described.

Happy to agree to differ. I think the close relationship between a CEO and Chairman can be vital in terms of support. As was the case with the previous Chairman. He's just making life harder for himself.

Ove seen this chairman and CEO role being taken up by one individual in a totally different business model. Its not a healthy situation in my humble view, and if both situations/ individuals are driven by the same force then it's not comfortable for other employees around that individual because there is an imbalance in power within the organisation, that can lead to wrong decisions. I hope this is not going to be the case at Ipswich.

Not very profound, but I liked the ying and yang when the last chairman was still in place. One brash and a bit 'look at me', the other slightly tweed jacket, or Cobbold--ish. ( I like to think the latter would have suggested the stadium announcer stop shrieking so much.)

I suspect your post is more how it is than some of the others, but who knows. O’Leary was barely there last season, apart from match days. He’d done his job with the deal and lives in the West Country. He was hardly stalking the corridors of PR on a daily basis or sitting in his office with a glass of scotch and a copy of Shoot. He was though clearly somebody MA could bounce stuff off. Whether he was a moderating influence or final decision maker I’m not sure. I suspect that’s always been the Americans, given it’s their money. He has said on many occasions he’s on the phone every day with them and Ed Schwarz seems to be a key figure. Clearly the CEO is accountable for the club’s performance in and off the field, from delivery of projects to the success or otherwise of the team. After last season on the pitch, I suspect he’s had a bit of explaining to do and rightly so. By and large, Americans don’t tend to mess about.

Sorry but what on earth is the point of this post? Just because public servants get a raw deal (which I agree with), you aren’t allowed to show gratitude or be impressed by the work ethic of somebody who gets paid well?!

If we’re going that route, what was the point of your original pity party post for Ashton?
