Leicester fan’s views on McAteer and the sale… collated from forum 10:14 - Aug 22 with 4606 viewsunstableblue

First off I have watched McAteer a number of times in Champ and Prem, the first time I saw him he excelled in a Championship game and I remember thinking he’s one to watch. Looking through the forum this was a purple patch of form when he broke out. But not sure he’s continued that. But he’s 23 apparently a good character and works hard. His best position seems to be a question. And the fee is maybe a little high. He’s a Burns replacement in my view.

Of note Sunderland made a significant offer last January that was rebuffed, £8m.

Looking through the Leicester forum there are some recurring themes, I’ve summarised, with some examples. I do think forum views are valid on a player, if you average them out - albeit the thought George Hirst was/is poor!!

1) HE’S NOT RATED

“Sell sell sell. He is so unbelievably poor.”

“Doesn't matter at all if he's a "local lad". He's pony. We cannot afford to be sentimental. Get him gone.“

“Weakening a direct competitor (well possibly a direct competitor)...
Clever. I like it.”

“Big admirer of Kasey’s work rate, but in terms of 1 vs 1 ability he isn’t good enough and not really a Marti type winger.”

“Sell straight away. He's simply not good enough“

“Love Kasey and I love the effort he puts in. But he’s not made for this system, he can’t beat a man one on one and doesn’t suit one touch football. ”

2) MANY SEE QUALITY AND POTENTIAL, HE’s A GREAT CHARACTER

“I feel uneasy with this, I think there is a good player there who can score goals.
Also a really good lad, hard working and local.”

“Kasey has a part to play this season. He seems to be getting better. He's not a starter, but decent cover.“

“I think he could improve but needs to play week in, week out and work out where his best position is.“

“Not a fan of selling to a divisional rival. Plus I rate him. he's one of the few players we have that can get into goal scoring positions. Despite having a limited technique. I don't expect our players to be brilliant, or win beauty contests. But I do expect them to be effective. Which Kasey can be. Maybe thats what Ipswich sees in him.”

“Selling him would be good business but he doesnt deserve the mocking he's getting on here.
He's done well to establish himself as a championship player, scored a goal at PL level and surprised a lot of us. Maybe he will surprise us again, although it is best that he gets a fresh start elsewhere for his sake and ours.”

“Kasey has a part to play this season. He seems to be getting better. He's not a starter, but decent cover.”

“He will be very useful at Ipswich. Look at what they achieved with s*!t like Wes Burns on their wing...”

“Sunderland wanted him and now Ipswich, yet some turn their noses up.
No doubt he'll be a squad player at Ipswich, the same as here. He for whatever you think of his current talent will form part of the squad be on lower wages and is young and hungry.“

“Slightly breaking from mould here. There's a serviceable player there if you surround him with some talent and play him right, you have a player worth having.”

“Feel like he's a little bit underappreciated by some of our fans. Looked really promising when he first came through in 2023 and it's difficult to evaluate a player over the last twelve months when you consider how dysfunctional we've been. As others point out he seems like a good character as well.”

“Interesting one for me. A good but not a great player for us, but a brilliant character. ”

3) FEE IS HIGH

“I actually like him and would rather keep but anything over 6m should be accepted.
Hopefully we can get the money they got for scamming Wrexham for Nathan Broadhead.”

“Looking at this, can only see the bid being in the region of £5m, £6m at best....sign of the times sadly but wish him well if he does go“

“No way we are getting the 8-10 mil that was reported in January, so yet another masterclass from Ruskin “

“Selling for £5m or so would be a no-brainer. Really likeable lad but not good enough really. ”

“If they offer £5m+ this would be an amazing deal”

“£12m + add ons is a ridiculously good deal for him
Hopefully we actually put it to use - just get Ipswich to send it straight to Millwall for us for Ivanovic”

“Unbelievable agreed fee.
I like Kasey but this is too good to turn down in the position we’re in“

4) HIS BEST POSITION IS UNCLEAR

“Keep! Stick him upfront. He's a good finisher and has work rate. Need more players with his attitude and work ethic around. Genuinely don't think he's a winger”

“Still needs to find what his best position is, I just don’t think he is a winger
Sell if we get a decent offer”

“Going to go against the grain here and say I'm not too sure we should sell. Genuinely think if he was given a run as a striker he'd surprise a lot of people. ”

“Personally thought he's more suited to a no.8 role - played very well v Stoke there under Enzo. ”

4) LEICESTER ARE DOOMED

“We can't hold him back. Let him progress and play for a team that doesn't have a toxic atmosphere and on a downward spiral. Plus we really need him this season which means he's too good for us and what we're trying to achieve.“

“I think once he's out of our toxic club he'll thrive.“

“my worry really lies around you selling one of the better attitudes who is more in tune age wise with this young crop we have. He's quite a wise lad and I am told, he's really good around Seagrave with the youth teams etc. You selling someone who cares and that its going to mean a lot of the next couple of years.”

“In terms of club culture, attitude, and respect to the badge. Selling McAteer would be one of the last things you do.”

“Last time in the champo..

kasey (with a long injury) : 26 apps

Leicester fans are used to a much higher calibre of player than we are in recent years, I am sure if they are comparing him to some of the great players they have had in recent years they don't rate him as much just the same as they were about Hirst.

Fee does seem high, but I suppose its peanuts nowadays for an attacking 23 year old full international

Are just foxes fans being incredulous at the size of fee, as per one of the themes

They’re actually impressed by their CEO for once

I think the Wes point is interesting two fold

McAteer is physical and hard working, has an engine, that’s Wes attributes

McAteer isn’t an out and out winger, and in many ways neither is Wes

Philogene like is the player type the Foxes want on their right… but that’s not exactly what Town was to play.

Cheers for that, very interesting.

Like so many signings, I’m sure KM’s assessment of McAteer’s best role + ability to improve with top coaching*, is key.

I was thinking the same. Also, not bad having someone that can cover as a right winger, striker and CM. That certainly gives us added flexibility off the bench or tweaking the formation during the game, especially when we are short of numbers.

He come across very very well

I believe when he says he’ll put everything out there for 95mims

His Champ record is good:

He broke through in 23/24… and came into the squad from U21s like a train… starting and 4 goals in 4 games

Good run in team… but then season was a bit injury prone

He did end up with 23 appearances and 6 goals.

He played 19 times in premier league with 1 goals (against us) and 1 assist

Some very good finishes indeed

Knows how to stay onside

Also OShea and the rest of the Irish lads will have trained extensively with him and given McKenna view… perhaps even a green light

The lad has suffered from a change of management at Leicester. He did quite well in their promotion season under Maresca. The fee seems high but market forces are influencing that. He can play on either wing although Leicester fans think he would be better as a central midfielder. Until we hear from KM regarding his signing, we don’t know where KM is going to play him. However, we do seem to have an abundance of right or left wingers at the club though when we desperately need CM’s and CF. Not sure how KM is going to keep them all happy tbh especially if Egeli signs as well?

Maybe planning to coach him into CM role if other wingers are fit?

Wes could still make a comeback with us?

Egeli is clearly not signing now. This is us rushing out to get somebody in as our other targets in that area have not worked out

We don't really play with CMs these days though. He looks like could play our no. 10 role, but we've got Szmodics and Chappers there. He's surely coming to share / compete with Ogbene for the RW role (but flexible enough to fill in right across the front 4).

Looks taller than I thought. All the noises about his press and being a really good lad, he sounds pretty ideal.

I just spoke with a Leicester ST holder at work. A summary of his thoughts:

* That's a bonkers fee, there's no way he's worth that atm - but then went on to say 'you'll probably get promoted and sell him for more!'
* He's quick and strong but doesn't have a trick (makes me wonder whether KM sees him as a finisher for when defenders are tired)
* One of the few Foxes players that's likeable. Most of them aren't.
* Could probably convert to a centre forward, certainly has the attributes (interesting)

I think alot of that aligns with your summary. Let's hope KM can work his magic and turn him into a real asset.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Yup your work colleague’s thoughts mirror much of the sentiment on the 16 pages of Foxes forum comments

Loads of people stated he’s not good and beating the full back, as per your trick comment.

He did play centre forward in pre-season I believe and bagged a goal. And he can definitely play through the centre.

Defo a good character

Most the forum posts on the 6 pages were saying the fee was brilliant for them, but a few do think that we can improve him and increase his value - which is what McKenna believes I imagine

For me he’s still young, and hasn’t yet had a chance to build on his strong form in the championship two seasons ago

You're not allowed to refer to any positions anymore unless it's by NUMBER.

And preferably the number 10, which seems to encompass most of the team, from what I understand.

I said 'some' not all. The point is when a team sells a player some fans will always make out they're happy.
Same now, with some Town fans highlighting the negativity of some Leicester fans as if it proves their point, McAteer isn't good enough for us. My point 'some' Huddersfield fans were happy then.
I prefer not to judge if a player will be good of bad for us based on that clubs fans
