Apparently we've 'taken information', whatever that means.

Was unreal in the championship with Burnley and clearly has been very highly thought of throughout his career having come through all of the ages in the England set-up

Clearly hasn't worked for him in France. Not sure he'd be a nailed on starter so would be surprised if we're adding to our squad options rather than looking for a partner to O'Shea or an upgrade on what we currently have

As an aside, people seem to take an issue with us potentially shopping in the championship, but if you look at the Championship team of the season that Egan-Riley was in, there's an argument to be made for that entire 11 (minus Sainz, obvs) being good enough to make a decent fist of it in the prem

Meh player

Meh player who was part of a team that conceded 16 goals across a 46 game Championship season, has started games in the Champions League this season and is still just 23 years-old.

Sign me up for more 'Meh' players!

Nice Jam song for that player.....

Edit: and of course he didn't get where he is today by biting people in the changing room....

Ah...indeed...it makes sense that we should never sign any players that haven't played in the Prem previously!

Seriously, we do need a few players that have stood up to the rigmarole of the Premier League before, but that doesn't mean all of our transfer business should be based solely on players who have that experience.

I am not sure if you are joking or not.

The level of player we sign has to be premier league ready, they have to be able to compete against that level of other footballers otherwise we will just get battered weekly.

You do know this right?

Last time we did what you suggest we got relegated and played off the park most weeks by what are premier league level players.

It's just completely unrealistic that we're only going to go out and sign players who have played in the premier league and also needlessly narrows our search down

We're also hardly going to have our pick of the best Premier League players and in reality will be more likely to land the likes of Phillips and Johnson again, which is hardly going to prevent us getting battered weekly

I'm honestly not sure what you're expecting from this transfer window but you're going to have to widen your scope from "must have PL experience" otherwise i think you'll be sorely disappointed.

Hate the term Prem experience, for promoted sides that usually means someone washed up. It’s the top European Leagues that have the value and often player that want to play in the PL. We can’t do all our shopping in the Champ again, god no.

Players of that level is probably the best description, as you say on their CV ideally they will have Europa or Champions league football behind them too. Basically everything has to be upgraded on the pitch.

A team of brutes is what we need.

'Premier League Ready' means nothing in reality.

Every single club is seeking 'Premier League Ready' players and the brutal reality is nobody knows until they play at that level.

Team building at the top level is such an inexact science.

If your solution is, only buy those playing for the other 17 teams then our money will not go very far.

Yes, I'm being serious. It doesn't mean we need to exclusively sign players that have played in the Premier League! That method would be massively expensive more than anything else. There are plenty of players in leagues all around the world that ould be more than good enough to get us to survival, and would be of much better value. Our £150M would be spaffed away signing about 3 players and 1-2 free transfers. 4-5 players added to what we have is no way near the level we need.

Good transfer business, that ensures the future of our club, needs to be a good mixture of, a few with previous Premier League experience, 7-8 plucked from championship or leagues from around the world at the correct standard and value, and a couple more cheap competent squad fillers.

Trying to sign only Premier League experienced players would be just about as successful as signing just the top Championship players, and we know how successful that is likely to be!

They must have experience of playing at a level that is aligned with the other players from the other teams otherwise it is not a game is it, we aren't going to be able to compete when the other players are so much better.

Totally and respectfully disagree, if we want to stay up then the 'levels' have to go up, filling the team with Mehmeti's and the like from the championship is just a waste of time.

I think there is a pretty clear in-between here.

Not PL ready does not mean only Championship players. You predominately buy undervalued players from top 5 European Leagues who have shown the ability to potentially play at the PL level.

That way you hopefully get value for money and raise the level.

OK, but what you said was - "He's not played in the premier league. Move on town"

But he has played in the Champions League and Ligue 1! In fact he came off the bench against Real Madrid and started against Atalanta. That's not bad experience at all and would probably be able to add something to the squad

Sunderland’s recruitment was off the charts and don’t think we have the coach with connections or director of football for that pull, well we don’t even have a director of football but we do need to try and follow in those footsteps. All Leeds signings last year basically were 6 foot 2 athletes as well and they went up with a much better squad.

We will be odds on to go down but we have a chance if we get the summer right.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

Yep! Go check a list all the clubs Sunderland and Forest went shopping in after they got promotion.

Clue it wasn’t Burnley.

My fear is a lack of European connections in the game, seems like steps are being taken to bridge some of that gap but probably a way off yet.

Could just be media speculation but I liked the link we had to the Senegalese lad in French top league, that was more like the profile we should be in for.
