Problems with the building work at ITFC 11:08 - Jun 4 with 7857 viewslurcher

Large amounts of asbestos have been found in the ground under the fanzone. The programme was already weeks behind and now many projects have been halted to get a specialist clearance company in.

Would it be correct to say that when the practice pitch was done years back, and turned into the all weather pitch, that someone somewhere just just dumped a load of asbestos in the ground then?

Seems no other reason for it to be there

It is probably much older than that. Possibly goes back to before it was a sports ground.

On another note, I was at Ipswich YM Rugby this morning, they are building access driveway behind the pitch for the new development, Rushmere Road could get quite busy....

Historically, asbestos was used for an extraordinary range of things (it's why I'm very wary of doing any abrasive or drilling work on pre-1990s artex ceilings). Considered something of a miracle material.

All long before the health problems were widely understood.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

What other projects have been halted?

I thought we were 'only' expanding the West Stand concourse, replacing the PA system and possibly sorting the WiFi this summer.

PA system won’t be replaced until the new stands are in.

WiFi? Doesn’t really matter.

It has been bought and Wanderers will get 9 more seasons there. A new 4K capacity stadium will be built there.

The concourse at the back of the west and the fan zone are stalled. I don't know about the wifi and PA. But it is feasible that crawl spaces in the lower south, Cobbold and the west lower all have issues with asbestos. I am told it is not just whats dumped under ground

Coming off at a tangent from that, the work Town paid for on the Colchester pitch/drainage was very good. Over 60 games were played on it over the course of the season, and it held up pretty well,- certainly up to normal L2 standards.

I think we have to sort the PA system this summer.

VAR announcements weren't a thing in 24/25, but now they are I doubt the current PA system meets PL requirements.

Am told there has been asbestos found but they've switched focus to other areas while it's being sorted, so not going to cause a delay.

From what I gather, the club is now looking elsewhere on that front.

A builder working there has told me that the project is already over running by 3 weeks. Quite a bit of work has had to be paused, having an effect on when things will be ready.

With this in mind, how much time is it going to take to take the roof off the west stand, which is full of asbestos?
Maybe plans for next summer. Seems like a complicated job

The roof is asbestos sheets. It will be a pre booked company who do that. The material itself doesn't pose a problem, it just has to end up in specialist marked land fill sites.

Some types of asbestos can be handled more easily.

The corrugated sheets used in roofing are safe so long as not broken up, being mixed in with concrete. If the bolts can be removed, the sheets can be taken off intact. Still needs proper disposal, but the actual demolition is less involved.
