Hopefully Flemming incoming is all but done.
The really obvious gap for me is RB - we need a dedicated 1st choice RB so that Dara can play in his proper position, and Darnell provides cover.
Are we loaning or selling Alex Palmer? Not sure how happy he would be to be 3rd choice.
Then there's Mehmeti and Taylor. If those 3 go out, we still have 2 squad places left after getting Flemming and a RB (but presumably Button would be 3rd choice keeper, leaving one more squad place) . I'd like to see another CB - we get through them during a season what with suspensions and injuries. Not sure I want to see Kipre up against some of the attackers in the Prem.

If Taylor is injured... not going to be easy to get a suitor. And Mehmeti wants to stay?

O'Shea has played RB throughout his career. He also plays there for Ireland. Greaves and Ouattara are the only cover for Davis and I am not sure that Greaves is really good enough at this level. | | | |

Greaves is excellent - until he loses his composure. Can O'Neil coach a more rounded game into him ? Does he have to have Leif alongside him for comfort (which makes for a compromise on team selection) ? |  |

I still think there is a lot of potential for improvement in Greaves (and in Davis) who has already had one full season in the Premier League. Perhaps we have a future England international in there but like Harry Maguire (or Titus Bramble) they will always have a mistake or two in them.
On a related side note, when I watched the highlights from the United game the following day I couldn't help feeling 'no penalty, Greaves got the ball' but what applied twenty years ago doesn't fit with the way referees operate now and that seems to be another adjustment Greaves needs to make to his play. | |

I think going to ground is what triggered the pen. The united lads stayed on their feet with Enciso and left the keeper to deal with it. I don't know what Greaves ceiling is, but maybe signing someone a little better will help us. | | | |

Agree, I think Greaves greatest strength is also his greatest weakness. He tries sooo hard - blocking and tackling and running and tries to be absolutely everywhere when we are under attack. But that also seems to be when his adrenalin level really spikes and he loses some composure in the heat of the moment. I think it is something that could be coached - we want the 100% endeavour, but he needs to remain calm in his head space.
But as for Cedric - I think he is suited to a slower pace of game, and with the electric pace of PL attackers, that is something I don't even want to think about. Good Championship CB, not good enough for PL.
But RB is the biggest gap for me. I think Darnell can be reasonable cover. But we need Dara in the RCB position, so we just have a massive hole at RB.

It only works if we can upgrade McAteer. No point getting rid if we can't get in a better replacement. The clock is ticking. And maybe he's good enough as a squad player to compete against lower half teams. That's where we need to get our points.

I think if McAteer gets game time then we will see him come on leaps and bounds, like we saw last season from the nondescript late substitution at Preston to the ever present threat he presented to the opposition towards the end of the campaign. However, if there is little likelihood of getting that game time then it is better for his development to be on loan to a potential top six second tier side (Millwall ? Swansea ? QPR ?) | |
