When will we break our transfer record 15:08 - Aug 4 with 6327 viewsgreyhound

With some clubs getting relegated but still breaking records it's obvious how upside down football has become.

If memory serves me sereni was our highest fee paid out at 6 million but that was 16 years ago. 16 years on clubs are paying that for fun but it sounds like the sort of money that would buy our squad 4 times over with enough to spare for the wages.

Were desperately far down the football food chain now, but it makes me want us to prove we can compete even more. After all money doesn't buy you trophies just the players that have better odds of winning them apparently

When we paid the money for Sereni we had the money to spend. That was around £5m.

Interestingly though the general feeling seems to be that anything 1m plus would now financially compromise us.

It's hard to measure what has changed with a richer owner and more lucrative tv finance. Plus a market place which now sees greater numbers of players simply disposed of to free wages and wacky sales fees.

We may have a rich owner, but our finances are certainly no better than they were 16 years ago.

TV money may have gone up massively over that time (in the Prem), but in relative terms it certainly hasnt for us.

There is now a HUGE gap due to the parachute payments, transfer fees and wages must have increase 4 or 5 fold in the last 16 years.

To be fair to ME, if he spent £10m on fees this summer it would still be a massive gamble because there would still be probably 10 teams with more expensive squads.

I was thinking this the other day.

This is our Top 10 transfer fees paid to date, I think (or back until the beginning of the Prem era, which should cover it).

01/02 Matteo Sereni £4,500,000
00/01 Hermann Hreidarsson £4,000,000
01/02 Finidi George £3,000,000
01/02 Marcus Bent £3,000,000
09/10 Grant Leadbitter £2,650,000
99/00 Marcus Stewart £2,500,000
07/08 David Norris £2,000,000
00/01 Chris Makin £1,400,000
01/02 Ulrich Le Pen £1,400,000
09/10 Carlos Edwards £1,350,000

According to my records, Garnber and Huws would be 13th and 14th on the list and £1.1m and £1.0m (assuming those reported fees are correct).

I thought Sereni was £5m but HH was £4.5m and a top up took him to £5m too.
Stewart had a 250k top up for promotion I think, to take him to £2.75m?

I wouldnt put Edwards in that list. £1.4m for a player who was distinctly average as a winger, the position he was bought for, but filled in well at fullback. He only really gets credit because of his longevity and attitude, but he wasnt an outstanding player (in either position).

I look at Edward's time at the club as an era in itself. One where we tried to source a winger and got someone past their best that looked out of their depth in more aggressive football, and was dropped to right back completely in effectively, straying out of position and without the stats to make a proper fullback.

It was the start of a period post stearman where Ipswich couldn't buy a purpose built right back for love nor money.

People have voiced doubts over spece and to some extent iorfa but these are players that will help us comfortably fit a system, and back onto the original topic. We haven't broken the bank for them

I thyink we might be better, in the long run, 'sitting this one out'.

It was spending money that we did not have that got us in the mess we are still in.

Many of these transfers IF, the fees are to be believed will be dependent on staged payments. Often based on staged payments coming in to cover them.

My view is that many are now unsustainable, and a domino effect could be the result. i kniw it's hard to bear, but maybe living within our means until the balloon bursts maybe the best course of action.

After Edwards had been at the club for about a year, he represented the benchmark of how our expectation had lowered.
Only 4 years earlier, we signed Currie for £250k and it was the first money we had spent in years. Yet here was a player who cost over £1m being "decent" and it seemed to be accepted.
Mainly because we had got used to spending that sort of money and getting even poorer performance (Im looking at you Lee Martin).

Problem with all of these lists is that so many of the fees are either undisclosed or guessed. Officially, Garner is undisclosed I believe, but £1m in some places, £1.1m elsewhere. Hadn't heard £700k, to be honest...
