Why 10:48 - Apr 11 with 1003 viewsBlueNomad

is our PM just known generally by his first name? Apart from Thatcher I don’t recall it being used for anyone else. It appears to be used in an almost affectionate way even by those who, like me, have absolutely no affection for him in any way whatsoever. Just seems strange to me and I will always refer to him as Johnson (as he was even at school).

I think it’s because he was a media personality before and built his brand as Boris - the two infamous hosting gigs of Have I Got News For You re-enforced or, in most cases, created this image for many. Because there’s more personal knowledge from media types towards him than other Prime Ministers it’s stuck, creating an impression of him being ‘one of the people’.

Also "Boris" is a slightly uncommon name. The Johns and Davids etc. don't have this.

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

I suppose it is ok to post this whilst he is still a little bit unwell.

Johnson is an American slang word for the pen15 and it could imply he's a bit of a knob or has been promiscuous... Oh

I agree with an earlier poster about it being brand Boris.

Isn't it interesting that our American born pm has a Russian name.

And Cameron as 'Call Me Dave'

Brown sometimes was disparagingly called 'Gordon' and some Americans liked to call him 'Gordy', I guess it was his Tamla vibe...

And Callaghan was 'Sunny Jim'.

As others have said, having an eccentric name is all part of his media profile as a bit of a joker. It's not completely unusual for politicians though - Trump being known as The Donald and Corbyn as Jezza.
