Not for long if the new owners are anything to go by. Why do people make these same mistakes?

The Black Horse is packed every Friday and Saturday with rock bands and busy on football days (Tuesday evenings and Saturday lunchtimes). It's not a 'local pub'. It has people who have been going for years and years for rock bands or football. I knew the old owners well and most of the bar staff. I'm aware just how much revenue they bring in on which day and how almost all of it is over those two nights brought in by the rock crowd that have been going there religiously for years.

They've already decided to have garage and soul and all the other kind of stuff that either isn't what people in Ipswich go out for, or is already successful elsewhere in other venues and they are not going to get that crowd there. In the meantime they are depriving themselves of their main revenue earners, rockers packing the place out week in week out.

They seem to have cancelled all the long standing bookings that would have guaranteed them as much of a crowd as they can accomodate and instead will be bringing things in that people won't be going to, as they don't know the venue, won't know if it's COVID compliant and they'll get a pathetic turn out. Seen it time and time again with other pubs.

I wouldn't be surprised if they start holding tiddly winks competitions at 12pm on home match days to drive away the football crowd.

Every new owner has their right to go whatever direction they want but the ones who change direction immediately and screwed within 6 monhts, less probably post COVID.

Stick to what the pub is known for, keep your clientele and then slowly introduce the other things you think will work and build up that customer base. If it works great and if it doesn't you haven't driven 90% of your revenue sources to other venues.

D'oh!

Dear Past and Present customers

As the new managers of the Black Horse Pub and as we attempt to settle into a new and exciting journey, we felt it important to try and outline our vision and hopes for the future. We are closely monitoring customers’ feedback and of course are reading with interest all the social media posts as previous customers voice their hopes, concerns and expectations and where they would like us to take the pub.

The first thing that we need everyone to understand is that we took the pub on when the industry as a whole has been in decline for many years. The pandemic has simply escalated the demise as more and more publicans decide to call time on their operations as meeting the considerable day-to-day running costs along with the escalating workload and a reducing customer base is simply not viable anymore. With this backdrop anyone would wonder why on earth would anyone take a pub on?

We are very aware that the Black Horse has its legacy as a rock pub and the strength of feeling by some of the previous patrons and those that have posted comments is palpable. However, what has happened in the past does not necessarily mean that it will work now and we have to take a long term view as to what is best for us as we have taken on the challenge and financial commitment to try and make this place successful.

To give us every chance of success then we need to appeal to the wider community so that everyone feels comfortable and relaxed and that they can come and visit at any time for a warm and friendly welcome. Our ambition is to not have any affiliation with any particular music genre which means that we do not want a label attached to us. Instead, we want to be known as a live music venue where we will organise for different artists to attend which will include soul, reggae, garage, tribute bands, rock and pop, 80’s and 90’s everything to try and appeal to as many different music tastes and to attract as many patrons as possible.

We hope that this gives you an idea of our vision and whilst we know we cannot appeal to everyone all of the time we trust you will do your best to try and support us as best you can as your local pub needs you.

Best wishes and we look forward to seeing you.

Funny thing about it is that it was about as "rock and roll" as candy floss, proper sh1t bands playing on the regular.

Fair play to them for having the stones to give it a go in this climate, even bigger fair play to them for realising that Bryan Adams tribute acts and god awful AC/DC covers are going to scare more punters away than bring them in.

Yeah I know. I have read it and I've worked around many pubs, know a great many landlords and have a good handle on why places like the Black Horse were still going strong when other pubs are closing.

Phil and Michelle left due to a family illness. It's not because the place wasn't successful.

What the new owners want to do is take a football club with a regular 5,000 crowd and have hockey, basketball and bowls instead and expect the same, if not better turnout. It's absolutely ridiculous and a mistake so many new owners make and it's laughable.

It'll be closed again within a year. This kind of thing is hard enough to pull off normally. During COVID it's suicide!

You are cutting off 90% of your revenue for the sake of trying to attract new customers, who will already have venues that cater for their tastes, like the Horse does for rock, in a time when people aren't going out as much, are wary of being in places like pub and when people will ultimately have less money to spend!

The pub go'ers that have come out of COVID the best are probably the middle aged rockers who have paid off their mortgages and have disposable cash to go out with a couple of nights a week.

I don't know anyone who has worked in or around pubs that doesn't think this is an absolute disaster.

Quite simply they could have cut back the rock bands and had other genres once or twice a month to get a taste for how well it would go. Changing what you are successful at to try something that other pubs are doing and failing at (look at every other local live music venue that has a mix of genres) is ridiculous.

Mate, a bit of rattan furniture and doing a bit of dusting doesn't change the odds, it was a grotty little pub, which is fine, we've probably all got space in our heart for a boozer that we know deep down was an absolute dive.

Good luck to them, but sounds like they are trying to emulate The Steamboat, not sure if there is enough demand for two venue's doing the same thing.

Not according to the people running the place. I'll take their word for it.

Bands on Friday and Saturday largely packed out. Two nights a week, so around nine nights a month on average.

In the same time we'd have between one and three home games, with one or two of those on Tuesdays which bring in far less, in a month we do play three.

They made a lot more money on a football day than a music night, but they'd comfortable make more money from the rock crowd than the football one over the course of an average month, about 65% of profit was from music, 35% from football (excluding people having their lunch in there and usual passing trade).

It's just that football Saturdays earned them 1.5 - 2 times more what they'd make on a gig night.

But bear in mind there will be nowhere near that football crowd. Even if we are allowed back, it'll be a massively reduced capacity and far less people wanting to go to a pub or being allowed in. Which is why killing off the thing that makes all your other money seems insane.

This is the thing. There isn't.

If anything it now allows someone else to come in and be the new Black Horse, take their punters and leave this lot being somewhere that barely exists on the football crowds.

But of course, as we all know the football crowd could be non existent or at 33% capacity for the next year, which is why it is utter madness to then kill off the only other thing that makes you money and risk doing something that, as you say, someone else is already doing.

There will also be plenty of people who weren't interested in watching some sad case pretend he's in Motorhead, that will give the pub a chance where they previously would have avoided it like the plague.

I can't stand Bryan Adams and am not very keen of AC/DC but the fact remains lots of people are and that's what has made them money.

It has a niche that has served it well. If it wants to be like literally every other pubs that has all sorts of bands it immediately loses that and becomes every other pub, which means it has to do it better than every other pub, which is almost impossible given COVID and the fact people on their rare nights out will likely go back to where they know and that they also admit to having no experience of live music, which means they are up against every other pub that does the same that has already learned and adapted.

I wish anyone well in these times and dont' get the clamour for a second rate Lemmy impersonator either, but it was good at what it did and they seem to be throwing that all away to try and do what everyone else shutting down has been doing!

You're over egging their formula and alleged success, it was a grotty little pub full of grotty little people listening to grotty little bands.

It was never "good at what it did" - Ipswich has a pretty rich history in alternative music over the last 30 years or so, the Black Horse wouldn't even make the footnotes.

It's very easily avoidable, over the road from the courthouse.

This is what they should do:

1 - dispose of all chairs/tables and replace with long benches/trestle tables, like Oktoberfest, but with Covid separation screens.

2 - dispose of bar and all pumps, barrels, shorts, glasses, bottles, loose foods etc.

3 - bring in vending machines that supply tinned craft beers, wines, spirits, pop, food, whatever.

4 - bring in a free universal jukebox where attending clients vote for genre of music being played, therefore always providing the most in demand sounds at the appropriate time.

5 - reduce staff costs by only requiring one person to fill up vending machines and check customer IDs.

You're over egging their formula and alleged success, it was a grotty little pub full of grotty little people listening to grotty little bands.

It was never "good at what it did" - Ipswich has a pretty rich history in alternative music over the last 30 years or so, the Black Horse wouldn't even make the footnotes.

Well that's a pretty stuck up your own backside way to describe it.

I'm from a middle class background so not going to pretend I'm Mr Every Working Man, but I've been to see a few bands over the years there and many of my closest friends are rockers and go there a lot.

They are also almost all season ticket holders at PR. So the same grotty people, are all decent people, some self-employed builders from council estates, one a solicitor and one a retired GP. They all just happen to like the same sort of music.

Nothing like tarring everyone with the same brush.

It's a sh1thole that could do with a change, fair play to them.

Why do class it as a shlthole?

I like the Black Horse for pre-football beer, proper old, historical pub.

It's just a grotty place with a grotty atmosphere, proper spit and sawdust pub, nothing wrong with that but the way some are talking on here you'd think it was a proper decent music venue that's packed out every week, when in reality it's a sh1tty boozer with bad covers bands.

I used to have a similar haunt that I enjoyed, despite knowing it was an absolute hole.
