Sorry to bang this drum again 12:11 - Sep 7 with 1176 views | WarkTheWarkITFC | But Nolan was poor on Saturday, Dozzell still wasn't that great and we still managed to play superbly well. Dozzell played a couple of lovely passes admittedly but the amount of defensive work they do, for two players that effectively were the defensive players in that system behind Bishop was awful. They let players run past them and make no effort to stop them. This has been the case with them for some time. I know Downes will take Nolan's place most likely but Dozzell just frustrates the life out of me because, for all the talent he may or may not have, the bare minimum should be him working his socks off and once a player gets past him he's like a sunday morning player that can't be bothered to track back.

He also gave the ball away plenty and gave Chambers and Bishop hospital balls. He's simply nowhere near good enough even if he was better than he has been for some time.

It's hard to teach someone to read the game defensively just in training and playing non-competitive under 23 football. It's a shame he's not really had a run of games since his big injury, it's really hampered his development and I'd rather we'd let him go out on loan than use him how we've used him over the past couple of seasons.

Sorry to bang this drum again on 12:19 - Sep 7 with 1071 views | captainfantastic | Dozzell had a good game. He was tracking back, but the striker ran across his line so dozzell had to hold his run. If he didn't he would have fouled him and got a 2nd yellow

Sorry to bang this drum again on 12:22 - Sep 7 with 1038 views | TheTrueBlue1878 | Was he? I thought he had a decent enough game. Got a letter better as the game progressed, think thats a slightly unfair assessment. Thought Dozzell was good on the ball, and was trying to be tenacious, tracking, doing the defensive side of that role, but not sure it is his long term position, who knows. Think Downes comes in for the deeper role, then its the question of who partners Bishop in there.

Sorry to bang this drum again on 12:22 - Sep 7 with 1034 views | clive_baker | I really don't think Nolan is poor at all. I think he could be the goal scoring midfielder & terrier that we need in there, but he seems to play within himself so much, like he's too afraid of making a mistake. He reminds me a little of Jamie Clapham, albeit in a different position. I don't think he realises how good he actually is. It seems like a confidence thing to me. He was excellent for Shrewsbury at this level and we've definitely seen glimpses of why in a Town shirt. I'm not writing him off. He and Dozzell do both need to impose themselves on games though, I would like to see them have a run of games to see if that gives them that confidence to know they belong there.

Nolan has somehow become a Chambers and Skuse scenario without having played for Mick. The sort where they write him off and try and replace him without any regards to what the team needs. They are criticised for reasons that don't really exist. Nolan is the most likely Downes replacement for the terrier like qualities that you mentioned. Nolan was the key when we did a high press previously, we don't really have many other midfielders like that, i have seen glimpses that show he has the talent. He needs a run of games in a settled team to find his role properly. Dozzell is frustrating, he is a class above on the ball but is lacklustre defensively, Mick would have been the best thing for his career

Yeah I agree. I think we have some players over the years whose brand is higher than the footballing reality. I make Nolan a reverse of that. Seems to have been disregarded as worthless on the basis he's been caught up in 2 of the worst seasons I can remember as a Town fan, but he's guilty by association on that one for me. I think he's a really tidy footballer. You can tell he's well schooled from Everton, and he's a good age and experienced at this level. Really needs a run of games though, and to grab games by the b0llocks a little more, I would love to see more of that. Someone needs to get in his ear.
