Primary school application..... 11:38 - Oct 22 with 1044 viewsitfcjoe

......without getting a bit MumsNet on this board.

How do people deal with this? Any good sites to look on for recommendations etc....

Main issue I have is that I'm pretty sure that we are happy with our catchment school, and seems good when speak to parents that have kids there etc..........but, on the admissions criteria if there are too many applications from within catchment area it goes on who is closest and we are probably the furthest point in the whole catchment area from the school.

Does this make me likely to miss out? I'd hope not - but means I need to get some back up schools in place presumably or could be stuck anywhere? Our closest school isn Broke Hall, but in a different catchment and think is always popular so probably would struggle to get there as well if issues with our catchment school.

Why did it ever change from just going to your local school?!

It's not changed from going to your local school but there are only X places there and if Y apply then there needs to be criteria. The real killer is siblings not distance, if there are 30 sibling places then that can be most of that years intake gone before they even consider distance.

On the applications it's important to remember each preference is taken in isolation so putting a school second doesn't mean you have less chance of getting it versus someone who put it first. It just means if you don't get your first choice then the second choice is considered independently on merit as a new "first choice" and there is no penalty for having it second.

If you don't get your preferences you can also immediately put yourself on the waiting list so when one comes up you can move intra-year.

That should all be correct, anyone with more info can correct any mistakes.

Apply for the one for you want to go to if it is in catchment.

I've never put a 2nd choice down ever. You can ask if they usually fill up on catchment or whether they are full because they go beyond that. You can also look at pan numbers.

Worst case I have been to 2 appeals. I can probably help you with those if need be because I've seen from both sides of the fence.

Check the admissions policy 1st and then ask what level they went down to for places

In Oxfordshire, we didn't get the school we wanted initially this year because of siblings and closeness of other people out of 60 people.

We were just over half a mile away and they send us to a school 1.5 miles away, not massive difference but enough to make it more difficult if walking and working.

If you don't get your preferred school, put your child on the waiting list, after we appealed and got turned down, we were offered a space at our preferred school the day before he was due to start his settling in session.

I think there are 90 places so it's a big intake, but no idea how that is normally filled each year.

Cheers for info re preferences, hopefully it goes smoothly

What are pan numbers? I've got a viewing at catchment one soon so hopefully can go through details and what I need to do from there

Why did it ever change from just going to your local school?!

I've been having this argument for years. Everyone seems to be happy driving across town to try and get their child in a school that is good rather than requires improvement.

Why wouldn't you put down a second choice? Putting a second choice makes absolutely no difference to whether you get your first choice.

I guess it might be different in London - they always fill up on catchment and often within 0.2 miles. One year a local school had 30 places of which 25 went to siblings and special cases leaving just 5 for catchment distance.

Not putting a second choice could end up with them being sent to somewhere miles away.

The max number for the school, they might say they are full but have capacity for more
Although the pan number for my school was 480 and it is now 512

Personally we’ve always gone with just the closest school, and luckily not had any problems getting a place (small village schools so probably less in demand). The main reason for me is that there’s such a turnover in leadership positions at primary schools that just because a school is rated good/outstanding when your oldest child starts doesn’t mean it still will be when the youngest child leaves, and vice-versa.

Our eldest’s first primary school had 2 different heads in 2 years he was there, then the next school where all 3 went had 3 different heads in the 6 years we were living there (and now has a 4th) and the new school our 2 youngest have just moved to has just announced the head is leaving at the end of this school year. Factor in turnover of governors etc too and it just seems too changeable to make a long term decision on anything except distance really.

I just realised this doesn’t actually answer your question, as you said you were already happy with your catchment school. In your situation I’d probably pick the second-closest one too as a back-up

Heath is catchment but Broke Hall closer as per their website where it measures walking distance using public footpaths - so presumably can go out the bottom of my road which I'd rarely do as is still a 2 mile walk which is a bit much for little ones!

If Heath oversubscribed from catchment area we likely wouldn't get in as are furthest away by their criteria.....I'll speak to them and see as ideally they'll just go there as like that it has massive fields and lots of out door stuff there for sports etc

Yep definitely definitely definitely put a 2nd choice down. I've often heard about kids offered a random place miles away from home when the parent has only put one choice.

When my child started primary everyone in the village got in along with some out of catchment too however the year before I think 2 children on the edge of the catchment missed out.

What I have noticed though is that unlike when we were kids and you'd get maybe one or two kids leave/join during the entire time at primary, nowadays they chop and change almost constantly (we worked out in the 4 years he's been there he's had 8 kids join and 11 leave just in his class!) so if you do miss out put your name on the waiting list and chances are you won't have to wait too long.

Poll: School on Monday - are you sending in your R, Y1 or Y6 kids?
