I know it’s very hard to feel much pain for Trumpist cult members... 03:18 - Jan 9 with 1836 viewsmonytowbray

...seeing as a large number are complicit in self-interest, a considerable chunk are outright racist and debating anyone with that much FlavorAid in their system is an act of self-harm. And this isn’t a new development, they were like that before Trump, but he gave them the microphone.

But like most cults, they prey on the vulnerable and insecure regardless of background. These people operate at every level of society on different scales. I’ve worked for businesses led by people who operate like Trump. I’ve had friendships and relationships with people I thought I could trust who turned out to be operating like Trump. I’m sure many of you have as well.

Verbal and emotional abuse can cause the same forms of PTSD in a person who has experienced physical trauma. And the saddest thing is we are very poorly educated about it as a population until we experience it first hand, often multiple times, until we can identify it. Many never do identify it and fall victim to the same cycle of abuse as it’s all they know.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/nov/25/trump-trauma-experts-abusive-rel

Trump’s shown the world first hand what this abuse looks like on a mass scale. Remember the warning signs and red flags, stay the f*ck away from them, they’re evil.

The positive of all this I hope is more discussion around mental health issues and trauma. In my lifetime I’ve gone from a depressed kid at school who had to MAN UP and get on with it to actually living in a day and age where you can take time off work for MH reasons or talk more openly about this stuff. But also, we have a long way to go.

But back to my original point, despite their views already being fairly skewed to even consider voting Trump, this is what he put them through...

He told them he loved them, that he’d never leave them. They made the ultimate sacrifice for him, then he left when they had nothing more of value to give.

Tragic really.

He's also left them, mostly, in the same - if not worse - sh1t that he promised he'd get them out of four years ago, while inequality has actually increased. Beware of men making improbable promises (or caveat emptor, as the Romans used to say).

Being someone with American family and friends all over the States from all walks of life, I know people still in the trance. You can’t talk them out of it. Facts and evidence are out the window. They’d pick Trump over their own family or friends.

What do they see when they look at him? The sane see a criminal drug addled narcissist with Daddy issues, no grasp of reality, no intelligence and a bad toupee and a spray tan (RTJ 3 MOTHERF*CKERS). To them he’s a business genius, a loving soul, a real patriot and a man of God.

Just, how?

I know people in the US (and Americans in the UK) who are exactly the same. Despite all the evidence staring them in the face, they continue to project what they want onto Trump.

I believe this speaks of their desperation for something other than "same old government as normal", which has seen their jobs or job security lost, other people getting vastly wealthier, old certainties disappearing, rapid social change, expansive promises not kept and so on. The same thing driving both Brexit and Corbynism in the UK, even taking Macron to the Elysee. For that matter, inspiring you and me, also. It's not, in itself, a bad motivation.

Problem is, as I've said many times, it leaves people vulnerable to being led down paths where that energy is being diverted - more or less cynically - to their own ends by populist demagogues. Who might promise change, but don't deliver it (or find they can't).

Just saw this and similar emotions. Being posted as a LOL but I couldn’t help but feel some sympathy. Read a really interesting analysis of Trump’s pre-coup attempt speech and he really has thrown some of his most dedicated followers under a bus. He was making out they’d genuinely stand a chance of succeeding and Trump himself would be at the front with them.

I hope they make mental health support free and easy to access soon, a lot of people from all sides are gonna need it.

I think that video is of an arrest for arguing about wearing a mask.

I think the last 2 weeks have really shot a lot of moderate republicans. Biden is by no means a good choice for a good amount of Americans and is vice is a very left wing (for America) running mate. I'm sure a significant amount of Americans would have thought Trump is the least bad option during the election.

I think their choice of least bad option will have definitely changed

Yep, they've been egged on by the President, and I'd guess the majority in the Capitol building were those just swept away by it all and feeling as though they were doing the right thing - but they've ruined their lives.

But it is a cult, and those leading it could not give one single sh(te about those suffering now, those who have fallen down the rabbit hole of extremism, led there by the silicone valley tech giants for profit.

It is quite amusing seeing Americans crapping themselves about having a socialist as president. In any other part of the world the Democrats would be seen as centrists, possibly even slightly right of centre given their economic policies. Even the more left wing fringe of the Democrats would be considered pretty moderate social democrats in Europe.

I Can Vote in the US and have always seen the democrats in a similar stance as the traditional Tory party I think over the last 10 years the Torys have gone slightly more right and the dems have gone slightly more left.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new green deal now they have both houses

Yeah I think that's pretty accurate. In the past I always saw them as like the more moderate Tories whilst the Republicans are like the loony back bench fringe of the Tories. Now the Tories have decided to run with the loony fringe and the Dems have definitely shifted a little to the left. The Dems are similar to New Labour I'd say, still relatively fiscally conservative but with some progressive ideas but very little, if anything, that could be described as genuinely radical.

On the 'ruined their lives' piece.......I would be very surprised if a Biden administration doesn't take a very lenient view in the medium term with those that took part but were broadly peaceful.

Ringleaders and thugs will get punished, but I would put money on the 'tourists' being pardoned as part of the 'healing process'......with the schtick that they were misled and lied to etc etc.

A personality cult indeed. Maybe there’ll be a ‘Jim Jones Review’ (not the band) discovery at Mer Lago?

They know he's not a socialist. It's just a code word for 'Help! He's going to increase the participation of Black people in politics, and extend the rights of women and the gays!'.

In other words they're upset that he's not going to be hurting all the people they love to see hurt at quite the levels they've been enjoying.

Of course, one thing I failed to factor in are the # of people who will be fired for their employees for involvement.

I've just seen in trade press a CEO of a company in NA has been chucked out by their Board for taking part.

There's going to be a fair few bigots out there weeping that, for once, their actions have consequences for themselves and not for others.

Thoughts and prayers etc.

I have very little sympathy. I know we're supposed to be better and look to heal the divide, but these morons have been told time and time again what they were getting into. To quote a phrase 'where does it stop'?. If there are no consequences from a failed coup targeting democratically elected individuals, what's to stop them (or people like them) trying again? Fk 'em. They need kicking up the @rse (judicially speaking) big time.
