James Vince 11:36 - Jan 30 with 2637 views | woodbridge_blue | Just watched James Vince score 98 not out in the Big Bash playoff, and he can't get anywhere near England's T20 team. And Alex Hales is the leading runscorer in the competition.

Just wondering if there has ever been a better time to be an England cricket supporter, bearing in mind we are pretty decent across all three formats.

Be nice to have a 25 year old Graeme Swann but decent spinner apart we're looking good for the next few years.

My lad's leg breaks got him eight wickets playing for Melton seconds during the shortened version of last season....bit of a way to go towards filling that gap in the England squad but as he's just turned 14 there's plenty of time.

Fantastic, good luck to the boy. I coach cricket for a living these day's but must admit the nuances of wrist spinning is beyond my capabilities!!

Out of interest, what made him bowl leg-breaks? Very difficult skill to master. I hope does well. What's his batting like? Seems to be a deal breaker for the England test side!

He first started playing age group cricket as a six year old, trying to bowl as fast as possible, much like all kids that age. Out of the blue he decided at around ten that he fancied bowling spin, and he just began bowling leg spin. He had two years in the Suffolk youth side, didn't get selected for a third year, but broke through into adult cricket last summer and he loves it there. He has decent ability with the bat but that has taken a bit of a back seat while he works on his spin bowling. Can't wait for this summer!
James Vince on 12:29 - Jan 30 with 2056 views | stonojnr | Hales will never play for England again, had he been honest about his drugs ban with them maybe theyd have relented eventually, but they have the luxury of picking people who fit in the team for their attitude, not just their ability to hit second XI bowlers to all parts of the ground and surprised you didnt mention why Vince got 98, and not the 100 though, when on strike, his batting partner had blocked out the last over to give him a chance, only 1 run to win, and AJ Tye accidently bowled a no-ball (called for height)... | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The look on Vince's face was a picture....pretty sure it wasn't deliberate judging by Tye's reaction.
James Vince on 12:34 - Jan 30 with 2045 views | Ace_High1 | Which is why I was buzzing last year when I had tickets to all of Englands matches and the SF and Final of the T20 World Cup in Australia which was due to be played in November 2020. I thought we were almost nailed on to get to the final with only Australia and India who could have stopped us. That was cancelled (heart broken) and now the next tournament is in India which will be a lot harder and can't see any other than India winning it.

That made me think of the time Alex Tudor was stranded on 99 not out when batting with Graham Thorpe.

Isn't there another T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022?

James Vince on 12:50 - Jan 30 with 2006 views | Chrisd | There's no doubt Vince is a classy batsman, but his wafting outside off stump is a huge weakness. I really wanted him to succeed in the test arena for England, he does ooze class when he's at the crease and batting confidently, but the world class bowlers expose that flaw. He can get away with it in the county game.

Poor mans Ollie Pope. Pope looks the real deal, will play 100 Tests.

England's depth now is ridiculously good, not ITFC good, but 'proper' good.

Pope is Ian Bell MKII, but yes he does look a very good batsmen. Just hope he fully recovers from that shoulder injury.

Which is a shame because he's arguably our best ever T20 batsman when you look what he has achieved For me, there's got to be more to it than just the drugs, he must be a nightmare off the field and has lost trust of his teammates

Best ever how do you work that out? Has dowe well in the BBL, but I would argue that is because he now has a free winter each year to play. Give the same to Buttler, Root, Bairstow etc and they would be topping the scoring charts. Hales broke the team rules and the managements trust. After Stokes in Bristol they set a culture and have stuck to that. Morgan picks on character, Hales sadly will never play for England again. Shame but it is his own fault. Also we are blessed with top order T20 batsmen so we don't need him. Buttler, Roy, Bairstow, Malan etc and then you have Batan, Root all waiting in the wings.

I'd think Ravi would still be in that 2nd or 3rd XI. (If teams were picked on merit, not with 'an eye to the future'.)

LOL, Bopara? No where near good enough, decent county pro but lacks the mentality for the top level, see also Owais Shaw, Mark Raprakash etc. [Post edited 30 Jan 2021 13:09]

He bats at 5 for Hampshire & is class, but England kept picking him at 3 which is just not his position.

If Mark Ramprakash was playing now for England he'd be far better managed than he was back then. Same with Graeme Hick. [Post edited 30 Jan 2021 13:27]

Still doesn't change the mentality. Some players just can't handle the big stage and turn it on when it really matters. Still good player, just not quite good enough for the top level.

I know I'm not going to change your opinion and I can't say my theory is any better, but what I will say is if you have people around you that believe in you and trust you that has a huge impact on someone's confidence. If you look back at Ramprakash and Hick's era they were constantly under pressure to score runs, otherwise they knew they were going to be dropped by the selectors. That approach doesn't really allow you to play your shots or your natural game. Back then the selection process was flawed, too much chopping and changing which didn't allow continuity and England suffered for it.
